THE NEW JERSEY MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION a federated state association of NATIONAL ASSOCIATION for MUSIC EDUCATION News From Our Division Chairs

2- Learning Stations or Centers are popular in education right now. Might there be a workshop on stations with a handout of where to buy or access the materials? For instance…link to teachers pay teachers…or handouts that we could make on a copy machine using card stock after we leave the workshop?

OR…a “make and take” workshop for stations with an extra fee for materials?

• Just a thought! Thank you for your interest in making our experience meaningful. I greatly appreciate your efforts! And I am glad I stayed for the dessert reception because I won tickets for a NJSO concert---very excited!

• More sessions on surviving your first 5 years. More sessions on how to create a yearly plan for units and lessons. • SGO practices. Danielson offering was timely, however I chose to visit the tech classes instead. • Maybe more technology, just because it is growing so quickly. Also, teaching the non-traditional student. • More specific string pedagogy and best practices seminars. • Anything involving cross curricular teaching. • How to use technology when there is only one device in the room and no projector. • More and more teachers are being graded not on what they teach but how (scripting, open ended questioning skills, powerful interactions, etc)

Your opinion REALLY counts. What would you like to see at next year’s workshop that you did/have not seen in the past? • I liked the idea of a reading ensemble but I was not aware of this until I arrived. • Information on teaching high school general music/music appreciation classes. • Perhaps workshop attendees might be interested in how some students are overlapping their high school studies with Community College degree programs? This is happening in the area of music at Ocean County College in Toms River, where I am currently program chair for our A.A. Performing Arts - Music degree program.

• I loved the a capella group that performed at lunch! • Writing successful SGOs. • Same as above - Vocal Warm-ups, Classroom Management Skills, Games/Bonding Activities. • How to talk with your administration regarding your evaluation, your budget, your schedule, etc. Also, a session on teaching preschool, and another on wellness for teachers.

• Feierabend curriculum information. • Info on how to survive your first 5 years. Info on how to create a yearly plan for units and lessons. • It was well planned with broad range of topics. Kudos! • Middle school choral recruiting ideas, dealing with the male changing voice in choral repertoire and singing technique; choral conducting technique.

• Handling non-traditional music students. • Technology workshops. • Masterclass for Beginning Flute. • Would a keynote/general session speaker create a higher attendance? I think the idea of reading sessions is a great idea but it should be more publicized so that more people will come prepared with their instruments.

• Personal health or a master class set up. • Continue to offer workshops on string pedagogy, maybe solfége for the instrumental classroom. • First Steps in music or Conversational Solfége workshop.
