Strategy 2: PDF
For teachers on a budget, a plain old pdf of the score will get the job done. If you don’t already have a pdf of your score, you can make one easily with a scanner or the camera on your phone. (Stay tuned for a detailed how- to article in a future edition of TEMPO) Use Acrobat Reader, Google Chrome or other pdf viewing software to display via computer, Chromebook or tablet. If your room is equipped with Chromecast, your Chromebook can project wirelessly.
Strategy 3: ForScore ForScore is the
leading app for music reading on a mobile device. Using an iPad or iPhone, each score is read by the app
as a PDF. The files can be saved on your iPad or synched through a cloud service like Dropbox. Project the score through a cable into the projector (VGA adapter required), or go wireless by using Apple TV rather than a cable to the projec- tor. Many performers and conductors already use ForScore instead of printed music. An available foot pedal connect- ed via Bluetooth provides page turning. When problems arise during rehearsal, ForScore will enable you to zoom in and circle/mark up the score on the fly.
No matter which option will work
best in your classroom, your students will benefit and your rehearsals will be- come more efficient. Picture this: • Rehearsal in progress. • Conductor cuts off and initiates a display/zoom/circle of part of the score for all to see.
• Students diagnose the problem • Conductor moderates & guides diagnosis.
&
• Students generate strategies to correct the issue. Conductor directs corrective actions, or allows students to break into sectionals for a short time to work on the problem.
• Positive peer pressure builds to make and maintain the corrections.
• Everyone reaps the benefits of increased engagement and more efficient rehearsal.
