THE NEW JERSEY MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION a federated state association of NATIONAL ASSOCIATION for MUSIC EDUCATION News From Our Division Chairs

Please let me introduce myself. I am Frank L Hughes, Sr. – the new President of our association. Our observation team has recently completed the observations of the eight candidates for the Master Music Teacher Award that will be presented at the Luncheon on Friday afternoon at the NJMEA conference. It was extremely hard to make a decision for the recipients of the award as all the candidates are highly qualified. You will have to wait for the Luncheon to learn about the recipients. There will be a meeting of the organization on the Friday morning of the conference. Our General Membership meeting will take place
on Friday, February 23rd at 10:15 a.m. I sincerely hope that you will make an effort to attend and be an active member of our association. There will be light refreshments and a history of All-State performing groups presented by Paul Oster and Nick Santoro. This session promises to be fun and enlightening. We are researching the possiblities of a “music oriented” trip for our association members. We have a travel agent who will put together
whatever trip we decide to take…Italy or Austria/Germany or L.A./San Francisco or Branson. Performances of prominent performing groups would be built into the trip, again, according to the group’s wishes. Your input is welcome. Family and friends are certainly welcome to be included. We must have a minimum of 20 people to set up the trip. Joyce Richardson, our President-Elect, has reestablished our mentoring program and we are looking for volunteers to be available to as-
sist in your specialty area. We also are looking for people to join our observation team to evaluate the candidates for the 2019 Master Music Teacher award. In addition we have a few seats on the Executive Board available. It’s not a large time commitment – we have four meetings a year. I know we have all had our fill of meetings; however, your input and participation would be greatly appreciated. Lastly, our next general meeting will be Wednesday, May 9th at 10:00 am. Paul Oster has graciously invited us to his home for the meet-
ing. Since most of the recent years’ general meetings in May have been in the central/southern areas of the state, we thought it would be ap- propriate to bring the meeting to the northern region. We hope to see you in February.
Special Learners Maureen Butler

By this time of year, I hope music teachers across the state are finding ways to successfully include special learners in their music class, and
are encouraged by the results of their inclusive strategies. Plans are underway to include a variety of workshops focusing on students with special needs at the February convention, featuring pre-
senters from our own New Jersey Special Learners committee as well as some experts in the field from New York. If you have any questions or concerns about your students, bring them to the Special Learners roundtable session. Similarly, if you’ve had successful experiences that you are willing to share with participants, bring those as well. The more we share and support each other, the better equipped we’ll be to provide meaningful musical experiences for all our students. In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns about the students that you teach, please contact me at the email listed above. continued on page 22
