impacts your team’s overall health and happiness—and happy, healthy employees make for happy, healthy companies. Here are three big reasons why helping
others will end up helping your business: 1. Strengthened team bonds: When team members volunteer together, they share a positive experience that builds a bond. In fact, in an employee poll, UnitedHealth Group learned that 81 percent of its workers thought volunteering had helped them create stronger company-wide friendships and connections. By positioning this as a special
opportunity to socialize outside of work while contributing to an important cause, you’ll undoubtedly notice excitement and eagerness among your employees. Over time, the positivity will spread, and before you know it, a majority of the team will be involved in these rewarding, friendship-building activities.
2. Increased morale: Many companies think happy hours are the best way to boost workplace morale. How- ever, you may be surprised to learn that, according to Deloitte research, 70 percent of employees say team-

wide volunteering is more likely to boost morale than happy hours. This indicates that today’s workers care more about purpose and impact than partying—an exciting trend, in my opinion, and one that companies should take note of. Volunteering will bring joy and
satisfaction to your employees’ lives, and these positive feelings will transfer to the workplace and create a more productive atmosphere.
3. Improved retention and loyalty: By strengthening relationships be- tween employees and boosting their morale, you›ll ultimately increase their commitment to your company. Volunteering on a regular basis helps everyone recognize that the work you do—both inside and outside of the office—has a deeper meaning behind it. Tis realization will position your company as one they would love to work for over the long-run. Our company has come a long way since
its early volunteering days. Since then, I’m pleased to say we’ve formalized a social responsibility program called “We Care: People over Profit.” We don’t just provide monthly, team-wide volunteer activities;
we also give employees three days of paid time off to use toward charitable endeavors. We’ve also begun donating our drug test kits to local shelters, rescue missions, and churches to help curb substance abuse in our community. Lastly, every year, we donate five percent of our profits to local charitable causes. Volunteering has done wonders for
our company. I truly believe it has helped us grow and thrive. I urge you to initiate a social responsibility program of your own. Your employees will thank you, your community will thank you, and your company will reap many rewards down the line. ❚
