or many of us, January is when we think about losing weight and starting new routines. It is a good time time of year be- cause we have less commitments, temptations and the incli- nation to hibernate. We have to remember not to set ourselves up to fail, however. New Year's resolutions can be daunting. Cleans- ing safely is very important because the release of toxins into the blood stream should be monitored by someone who can diagnose you properly and knows which herbs would suit you best. Herbs are medicine and should be used wisely.

A three week nutritional cleanse rather than a liquid fast, which is not for everyone, is what I suggest. Eliminating heavy and toxic foods such as dairy, sugar, processed foods, refi ned grains, alcohol, caffeine, additives, and red meat will give our digestive system a break and allow our body to heal. In addition, taking herbs that help cleanse the liver, kidney and intestines will assist the cleans- ing process.
Chinese medicine is a major part of my health practice, therefore I always use this method to look at each person’s constitution or type as well as looking at the seasons. Each person has his or her own health tendencies and weaknesses so not every cleanse should be the same. Are you hot, cold, wet, dry, over active, tired all the time? Warming soups, lots of cooked vegetables, and some whole grains could be the basis of a winter cleanse with variations for each person.
Realigning the emotional aspect of our health is just as essential since we live in a very fast paced world. Beginning a simple meditation practice would be very benefi cial in conjunction with a dietary cleanse because it focuses the mind and calms the adrenals lowering the production of stress hormones. This will give us time to look inward, be present in our body, and give gratitude for the miracle of our body and our health.
