EOWYN 10-year-old Eowyn is a school councillor. “I heard about the school council when I started here and liked the idea, but I get stage fright so I was worried about talking in front of people.” She discussed her concerns with her teachers. “They were great, they never pushed me but said it might help me and I could always stop if I wasn’t happy in the role.” Now she loves it. There are two councillors in every class and it’s their job to speak to their classmates about what needs to be improved or what they would like to see more of in school. Councillors then feed this information back at weekly council meetings. Top of the agenda is getting the monkey bars re-installed in the school field. These had to be dismantled for safety reasons and the children now want to work out how money can be raised to buy new ones. “Being a councillor is a great role because I’m helping to make a difference. I think it’s really important to have a school council so everyone’s views are heard and I’m a lot more confident than I was when I started.” Eowyn only joined Stoke Fleming a year ago. She was born in France and lived in Switzerland. She loves Britain but says it rains a lot more than it did abroad!
