yard, stable & paddock Flood planning is vital
As too many of our readers already know from firsthand experience last winter, flooding is a horrendous experience, affecting not just property and land, but potentially also horses, livestock and pets.
Even with weather warnings and flood alerts, floods can and do take still take people by surprise, but having a well thought out flood plan can make all the difference. So if your home or yard is potentially vulnerable, now’s the time to make a written plan that should ideally include the following considerations...
• Think about how you will inform family, staff, livery owners and others about an impending flood and how they can potentially help with preparation and if necessary, evacuation
• Know which grazing fields are higher ground and onto which horses, livestock could be moved. If you don’t own that land, seek permission from the owner for emergency use if it becomes necessary
• Identify which horses, other animals – don’t forget dogs and cats – and machinery that could be moved off the property to prevent loss or
damage
• Consider whether fuel storage tanks could be drained and any chemicals moved to prevent contamination of flood water.
• Think about forage and bedding materials; can you raise them off the ground to minimise damage or loss?
• If you have to leave your property, move as many items as you reasonably can upstairs and turn off all gas, electricity and water supplies
• Know which local roads are likely to flood and which routes will be safe to travel with vehicles, so that any evacuation is safe.
• Look at the potential for flood protection work or products to reduce the potential impact on your property – and ensure you have adequate insurance cover in place
• Have a plan for what happens after a flood to keep any business running and get things back to normal as soon as possible
Finally, don’t leave it too late if you know flooding is imminent – putting your flood plan into action sooner will make it easier to minimise any loss and damage.
