the big test
Rugs for this and rugs for that…who knew there would be so many styles, colours and abilities available to keep the equine population happy, warm and dry. So, do you have one with or without a neck cover, should it be this gram weight or another? Our panel of testers have been encasing their horses in a variety of rugs to help you choose.
Rugging Up!! Horze – Avalanche Stable Rug
The company says: This redesigned stable rug has been improved with new T-buckle front closures which are easy to fasten and adjust. The high-neck shape keeps pressure off of your horse’s shoulders and allows movement without rubbing, while the breathable shell is sturdy and strong. The cross surcingles, with elastic trim and detachable leg straps, keep this smart-looking rug securely in place, while keeping cold drafts away from your horse. Machine wash at 40°. 300D polyester, 250g filling. Navy. Sizes: 5’6 – 7’3 (115cm – 165cm). RRP: £79.99

Our tester, Barbara Clarkson, says: If ever there has been rug envy on our yard, it is now! This is a very smart light/medium weight stable rug. It is very well made from good quality fabric and its design allows the horse to keep warm at the base of the neck without having a full neck cover which often cause overheating. The clips on the chest are great, as is the unusual extra sticky strap which makes the fasteners even more secure. The sizing is very generous and the 6’6 we had also fitted a 6’9 horse very comfortably, plus the depth of the rug is also good. Very light to handle, has a generous tail flap although not quilted like the rug is, leg straps, cross belly straps and a tail strap too so can be as secure as you need it to be. My horse has lived in this rug for the past weeks of the testing period, he is fully clipped and has certainly been kept warm and comfortable. He’s been a very happy boy with his very smart new coat on and I’m sure he’d recommend it as much as I do.
Horseware – Rhino Stable Rug & Hood
The company says: Classic cut design with double front closures and updated to feature a cosy fleece collar around the neck, integrated wither pad to lift the rug which aids in preventing mane or wither rubs. Fillet string, cross surcingles and shine enhancing polyester lining.400g Thermobonded fibrefill for superior and long lasting heat retention. Detachable hood available separately. Navy with Cream Check and Navy. Size: 5’6 - 7’3 (115cm -165cm). RRP: £125.95.

Our tester, John Collier, says: My horse thought Christmas had come early when I fitted him with this rug. It’s seriously good and just feels quality. Well made using a rugged outer material with a polyester inner and a soft neck collar. The fittings on the chest, surcingle and fillet string are robust and the hood is held in place by substantial Velcro straps. It fits him very well, looks good and stays in place. I’m thrilled to bits with it, it’s a good weight and looks as though it will last a good few seasons of wear. I simply cannot fault it and I can understand why these rugs are so popular, so on the strength of this one I have ordered six more. A definite buy!
