Church News News from St Hubert’s and St Nicholas’...
One of the highlights of moving to a new area is discovering all that a new place has to offer. We were therefore delighted to discover the Tivoli theatre in Wimborne and were not disappointed when we visited. It was a long time since we had had the experience of being shown to a seat by an usher at the cinema and ice creams being sold in the interval.
The evening took on a sombre tone because we had gone to see the fi lm Dunkirk. It was sobering to be reminded of the enormous cost of war, although the overwhelming message I was left with was the courage of so many: young soldiers facing a fi erce enemy; those manning boats of all sizes to recover the British Expeditionary Force from the beaches; RAF pilots battling to provide cover from the air; and leaders making life and death decisions affecting many thousands of soldiers.
Courage continues to be a vital quality, including the moral courage of leaders to make diffi cult decisions for the greater good of the community, often in the face of heated opinions. The courage of ordinary people also is a quality I see regularly in my role and hugely admire; for instance, those who selfl essly care for loved ones – often battling their own fears and uncertainties for the future, and others who willingly champion the unpopular causes and speak out for justice.
Remembrance Day this month is an opportunity to remember and pay tribute to those who have courageously defended our freedoms in military confl ict, but also to be inspired again by their example.
A Service of Remembrance with the British Legion will be held on Sunday 12th November at 2pm in St Nicholas Church and all are very welcome to attend.
Finally, we were very grateful for the many harvest gifts received for the Foodbank and the generous donations for Christian Aid; £435 was sent to support farmers in Malawi.
