FINDING FRIENDS ON THE TRAIL

Contributed by Twylight Allison Have everything you need for a trail ride ex-

cept someone to go with you? Many of us have been in the same situation. There are several ways to meet other trail riders and learn about exciting riding opportunities. There are also a few things to consider when riding with others to make your ride enjoyable. Social media is one of the best ways to con-

nect with other like-minded riders. If you live near a place with equine trails, most likely there is a Facebook page with information about it. Many times, other riders will post when and where a group is planning to ride. Once you have joined the Facebook group, you can also post when you would like ride, and invite others. When riding with new people, find out

some basics about their riding. Some riders have gaited horses that will ride at a quick pace, while other non-gaited horses will be slower. Ask if they plan to walk, trot, and/or lope. You don’t want to get with a group that is condition- ing their endurance horse if you want a leisurely trail ride. Finally, determine the length that is planned. This will help you decide how much water and snacks to pack. There are many clubs and trail riding or-

ganizations that will connect you with others. Texas Equestrian Trail Rider’s Association (TETRA) has many organized, group trail rides each year in all parts of Texas. The Texas Trail Challenge Club (TTCC), Texas Endurance Rid- ers Association (TERA), American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) and North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) all host rides each and many offer several clinics each year. These organizations offer new riders a mentor to partner with at their first ride, and novice and seasoned trail riders are all welcome. w
