Amateur Spotlight: Abigail Teets

Abigail Teets lives in Buda, TX, and is a full-time student at Texas State University in San Marcos. Her horses are Keebler, a Rocky Mountain Horse, and Bodhi, a mustang, and she keeps them at Grayar Farm in Driftwood. She competes mostly at Dripping Springs Ranch Park, in ranch events, western dres- sage, and speed (for fun!).

Most Proud Show Moment? When I

took Keebler to his first ranch show this past July, I was thrilled when he was completely focused and willing, even though I asked him to do a ton of new things. We won ranch rid- ing in the open division!

Challenges? Keebler is a Rocky Moun-

tain Horse. Typically when you see those, they are out on the trail, and not really in ranch or dressage competition. A lot of judges in those events aren’t familiar with the Rocky Mountain Horse breed. I think he is some- times underestimated in his ability to perform alongside true ranch and dressage horses, since he’s not quite built the same and moves a little differently.

Role model(s)? Reata Brannaman is Buck Brannaman’s daughter, but has made a name for herself by running her own colt starting business and teaching in the equine program at Montana State University. It’s in- spiring for me to see a young woman achiev- ing so much success in the western industry.

Words of Advice to other non-pros?

Don’t put yourself or your horse in a box. Re- gardless of what a horse is bred for, I think cross-training and trying different events is extremely beneficial both mentally and physi- cally. If you have the opportunity to go some- where different or try something new with your horse, you should absolutely take it!. w
