FUNDAMENTAL ANALYSIS
Hollywood, why the hate?
The general rule of thumb for Tinseltown is those who are involved in finance are obsessed with making huge profits, no matter the cost. Now I find this a little two faced. Yes, whatever type of business you are in the overall goal is to make money. But I don’t believe for one second that the
constant
line up of limp S u p er h er o movies released year aſter year are for the greater good. Of course not, they are produced to make ridiculous amounts of the money and sell countless t-shirts and toys despite the quality of the film. It appears to me to be a case of “Pot calling Kettle black”. So is it purely a case of don’t look at us, look at them?
Another reason for why the financial world is painted in a negative light is the general public’s views of the industry. By all means over the years we have had plenty of real life
financial market works. You tell someone that you work in manufacturing, they get it, you make something. You tell someone I am in finance and I trade derivatives, those outside of the industry would most likely not understand what that is.
So it’s easier to portray a successful stockbroker having made his way to the top by cheating other than simply showing that he/she is good at their job and why.
And finally for a storytelling perspective.
Let’s face it, it’s
cases of insider trading, stock manipulation, Ponzi schemes and cases of conflict of interest, but many industries have incidents of corruption. The key issue here though is often the lack of understanding on how the
FX
a far more interesting story if our main character is flawed. Showtime’s “Billions” illustrates this perfectly, with Damian Lewis character Bobby Axelrod the perfect anti-hero.
Axelrod
who is from a blue-collar background is a brilliant hedge fund manager who

has also risen to the top by insider trading and bribery. This

him a far more in t e r e st ing character

up from nothing from just his knowledge and talent alone.
At the end of the day the silver screen is never going to change how it depicts those who work in finance, it would just be nice one day to see a film where the strapline said something like “Successful commodities trader saves the world from total destruction”. But that will never happen.
