New ArmaComfort from Armacell reduces noise levels in commercial and domestic drainage pipe applications
ArmaComfort AB and ArmaComfort AB Alu offers high performance noise control for rainwater and wastewater pipes.
Armacell, leading manufacturer of flexible technical insulation materials, has unveiled ArmaComfort AB and ArmaComfort AB Alu, a new range of acoustic foams designed specifically for noise control in plumbing applications.
The products are easy-to-install, whilst the multi-layer construction, consisting of a 2mm thick foil face acoustic EPDM-EVA barrier with 4kg/ m2 weight and a 10mm polyurethane foam layer for decoupling, makes it far more effective compared to traditional products, and at much reduced thicknesses.
The ArmaComfort material is highly flexible and easy to fit, allowing it to be installed in tight spaces without the need for special tools or accessories. The handy roll format and self adhesive backing allows fast and simple installation.
HIGHLY EFFICIENT NOISE CONTROL SOLUTIONS
Noise created by wastewater pipes and internal rainwater systems are one of the most frequent sources of disturbance in living and working environments. In un-insulated applications this noise is transferred via pipes to wall and ceiling elements, and from there to internal rooms.
ArmaComfort AB and ArmaComfort AB Alu has been specifically developed by Armacell to provide a highly effective method of attenuating these sound waves in apartment and residential buildings, offices, hotels, hospitals, schools and private homes.
Independent tests by CSTB (Centre Scientifique et Technique du Batiment) confirmed that ArmaComfort AB reduces the airborne sound pressure level of a Geberit roof drainage system by 16dB (A) at 2Vs water flow.
Similar ArmaComfort AB tests on a PVC pipe, where the vibrations caused by flowing water are stronger because of the lighter weight PVC, achieved a noise reduction of 12dB (A). The human ear perceives a reduction of 10dB (A) as halving the volume.
ArmaComfort products achieve a weighted sound reduction index (Rw) up to 28dB when pipe and elbows are insulated.
In comparison to traditional acoustic insulation products, ArmaComfort AB achieves a much greater reduction in the sound level with a thinner wall thickness. The new materials have very good acoustic damping and acoustic isolation properties across the frequency range relevant for building acoustics - irrespective of whether it is installed on cast iron or PVC pipes.
LOW SMOKE DENSITY IN A FIRE
The products display very good fire behaviour; with B-s1, d0 ArmaComfort AB Alu achieving the best fire class for organic products in the European SBI test.
Aluminium foil pressure bonded to the decoupling foam complements metal-clad installations in areas where the pipes are visible and as a closed-cell insulation construction, ArmaComfort AB prevents condensation forming on pipes.
FLEXIBLE AND ROBUST
The new acoustic insulation materials are flexible, yet have a tougher surface than traditional Armaflex products. They are installed in a similar way to elastomeric insulation materials and do not require any special tools. The tried-and-tested Armaflex adhesives can be used during installation of the ArmaComfort AB products. The longitudinal seams should also be secured with the appropriate self-adhesive tapes. Contractors will find that the thinner thicknesses required to achieve the required decibal reduction is an advantage because it makes installation in tight spaces much easier.
NOISE CONTROL IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE IMPORTANT
Noise at work, in public buildings or in the home, has become one of the greatest environmental problems of our times. Although the acoustic insulation on external structural elements may have been given adequate consideration, noise from wastewater pipes and rainwater systems is often overlooked.
The consequences of this only become noticeable when the building is occupied, at which stage it is much more costly to remedy. It is therefore essential that noise abatement measures are taken as early as possible in the design process. ArmaComfort AB products are suitable for use in new build and refurbishment projects.
