is an
innovative ‘room in a roof’ system that enables the installation of a pre-fabricated, fully-pitched roof in a matter of hours, rather than days.
Peter Wilcox, Development Manager at Recticel, outlined the many benefits of the pioneering product at Explore Offsite - a presentation of offsite construction solutions and masterclasses, and a highlight of the three-day Ecobuild exhibition held at ExCeL London in March.
L-Ments® simplifies and speeds-
up the installation process for specifiers and contractors alike by applying the ethos of modern methods of construction to traditional insulation solutions. The result is a fully-insulated roof that can be fitted in one day, making it the ideal, offsite solution for the UK’s burgeoning housebuilding sector and homeowners seeking more living space without moving house.
During his presentation, Mr. Wilcox explained the supremely-simple methodology behind L-Ments®
, which helps new and refurbishment
building projects achieve near-zero carbon standard. Rather than cutting insulation boards to fit between the timbers or trusses of a pitched roof, an L-Ments®
around the timber rafters. The L-Ments®
panel is produced by foaming polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation system combines the benefits
of traditional and off-site roofs whilst minimising the downsides of both, replicating a modular product - constructed offsite to tighter tolerances and higher quality standards - that ultimately provides a liveable roof space.
Using case studies to highlight building projects that have used L-Ments® to successful effect, Mr. Wilcox was able to demonstrate how the system helps utilise ‘dead space’ in buildings. By creating more living room, L-Ments®
potentially adds sizeable value to a property. A private new-
build in Burley, Hampshire provided an example of the system’s effective specification.
In the first UK project to employ the L-Ments® (195m2
system, a total of 25 panels
) were installed in a matter of hours to form a fully-insulated pitched roof for the detached house. Architect, Nick Lacey of Nick Lacey & Partners, specified L-Ments®
for its prefabricated element as he required
a thermally-efficient system that quickly waterproofed the partially-built home to help speed-up the construction process. Such was the ease of installation; the pitched roof’s construction was completed in just seven hours. Mr. Lacey said: “Working with the L-Ments®
system proved
to be a very good choice. Its an ingenious concept - a pre-fabricated roofing system which not only saves energy, it saves time and money on installation. It also offers a safer way of constructing.”
