AROUND TOWN Magna Scores Le God

Oh, when the Saints go marching in, they’ll want to be here at Magna as Le God himself is making his way to the steel fortress for An Evening with Matt Le Tissier.

have made him the most expensive player in the EFL at that time – a drop in the ocean compared to the recent acquisition of Neymar for just shy of £200million.

But despite his talent and interest from other clubs, Le Tissier carried the Saints through tough times, his undeniable goal scoring efforts helping preserve their top flight status after dropping into the relegation zone five times in the first seven Premier League years. During one season, they only survived on goal difference.

Kicking off a season of sports evenings at the visitor centre, Southampton’s well-loved playmaker is the first of many big sporting names to be scored by Magna.

This November, retired footballer Le Tissier will be joined by former BBC sports commentator, Malcolm Lord, for an evening of entertainment and after-dinner speaking in the Big Hall. After broadcasting 12 Wembley cup finals and four World Cup finals, Lord will become Master of Ceremonies with questions ready to fire at Saints’ sharp shooter. Born in Guernsey, Matt went on to become the epitome of a one- man club, lacing up his professional boots aged 17 at The Dell with Southampton in 1985 and staying with the club until his retirement 16 years later in 2002.

Following in the studded footsteps of Gazza and Merse, Matt’s early ability and performance lead to him winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 1990. Does he regard this as his first greatest achievement?

Creative and technically gifted on the pitch, with an eye for the goal, Saints’ attacking midfielder made a total of 540 appearances and scored a staggering 209 goals during his club career, becoming Southampton’s second highest goal scorer.

But which was his favourite? His season goal tally regularly netted double figures, with a chipped 40-yard screamer against Blackburn Rovers’ keeper Tim Flowers – a former Southampton teammate – being dubbed the 1994/95 Goal of the Season. Surely that stands a chance. And during a game against Sunderland in 2000, a last minute penalty meant he became the first midfielder to score 100 goals in the Premier League.

Many people’s football trivia knowledge probably encompasses Le Tissier’s notable penalty performance; despite his sluggish pace and low stamina on the wing, his almost clean sheet record of converting 47 out of 48 penalties made him fearsome from 12 yards. What did it feel like missing that only penalty?

After over 400 league games, nearly 100 cup matches and eight England caps, his last competitive goal, and the last goal scored at The Dell before their move to St Mary’s, came at the end of the 2000/01 season against Arsenal – a fitting tribute to Saints’ God. For many, Le Tissier was seen as a big fish in a small pond, dedicating his career to Southampton and turning down big bucks moves along the way. In 1995, Chelsea bid £10million for his transfer to The Blues, which would

After retiring from the glorious game after a successful one-club career, Matt will have some stories

to tell, especially now his days are spent scrutinising the sport from the set of Sky’s Soccer Saturday where he is a mainstay pundit. From that very first match in 1985, to becoming the first former Countdown guest to become a contestant, and now the honorary president of Guernsey FC; his memories are littered with top-rate players and red and white flows through his veins.

Despite who you pledge

allegiances to from the terraces, an evening with Matt Le Tissier is sure to be one to remember.
