to the September/October 2017 edition of Aroundtown. Dear Reader

Welcome O

ne of the most rewarding aspects of this job is coming across groups and individuals that achieve wonderful things that often don’t get the full recognition they deserve.

Probably the most unsung of all these is Barnsley Youth Choir whose phenomenal performances on World and European stages have seen them rocket to number 22 in the top 1,000 choirs in the world. Listening to their story told by musical director, Mat Wright and watching videos of them receiving their awards in Riga, with the word ‘Barnsley’ ringing out again and again, was something really special.

In Rotherham, there’s one sport that seems to be under the shadows of football and rugby. Yet, 90 years on and Rotherham Hockey Club are celebrating their big birthday in style with the launch of their new home ground which they have raised money to rebuild.

Going back even further into the record books, renowned Egyptologist, Joann Fletcher, has resurrected the connection between Yorkshire and ancient Egypt with three exhibitions being showcased in her hometown of Barnsley. So it was perfect timing that local palaeontology student, Emily Swaby, gave us an insight into the future of natural sciences.

In the blink of an eye, the summer has gone, the children are back at school and hints of the festive season are starting to appear. With a season of change, we bring you some lovely warming features with everything from autumn fashions to jobs to do in the garden.

Talking of out and about, once again we showcase fantastic events and independent retailers that we hope inspire you to keep it local.

It is hard to believe, but while you enjoy reading this autumn edition, we little elves will be out in South Yorkshire preparing our bumper festive edition.

Happy reading Cheryl and Amber x www.aroundtownmagazine.co.uk
