Along with a wheelchair-friendly roundabout and swings, Ray’s vision included a soft track path which would snake down through the woods and around the school’s front lawn.
This has been created by construction companies, Fortem and Eurovia, who were drafted in to help by Tom Knight of Sitwell Rotary Club, a major partner in helping Ray’s plans come to life. During Ray’s epic feat, he raised £35,000 through donations and sponsorship. Thanks to Sitwell
Ray approached Newman School two years ago with his plans to raise money for them by tackling 75 consecutive marathons over 75 days to mark his 75th birthday. “On that first visit to discuss Newman’s wish list, I walked up through the woodlands in front of the school and was inspired by what we could set out to achieve. It’s surreal to think we have finally done it,” Ray says.
At its official opening on Tuesday 12th September, the school of excited students will finally have the chance to enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment.
Rotary Club, the plans, materials, equipment and labour costs of the £40,000 new path were generously gifted, enabling Ray’s money to be spent on the play area.
Ray and the team have planted the path borders, fenced off sections of the path and created homes for wildlife in the woodland, with activation cameras set to capture the foxes and squirrels that live there. They have also installed benches and wheelchair pads for children to sit and enjoy nature. “I’d like to thank my French colleagues, major sponsors such as New Balance, my physio for getting me through it plus everyone who donated not just money but their time willingly which you can’t put a value on.”
Now 76, Ray has been hard at work with his own drill and spade each day to get the project finished. As the school caretaker so rightfully said: “There has never been anyone in South Yorkshire who has had as much influence as Ray yet remained so humble throughout it. He really is a hero to us all here at Newman School.”

woodland path
for Newman School
Almost a year to the day since Ray Matthews completed his gargantuan 75-marathon challenge at the Newman School finish line, his dreams for an adventure woodland path and playground for the pupils have been brought to life ready for the new school term.
