OUT AND ABOUT
Walk around Whirlow
with Sue Moore of Dearne Valley Ramblers
A circular walk taking in nearly 10miles of Sheffield’s spectacular suburban scenery through Whirlow, Hanging Water, Endcliffe and Ringinglow with rambles along waterside, through fields and across parks with historic connections along the way.
Grade: Moderate with two short climbs, easy to negotiate
Start: Upper car park behind Whirlow Brook Hall (just off Ecclesall Rd South S11 9QD)
Turn left along Ringinglow Road, turning right at a fingerpost to descend along a path that joins with Common Lane. Turn left down the lane for a short way, then take a path to your right. When you reach Ivy Cottage Lane,
Take the path behind the café walking anti- clockwise around the pond. At a fork take the left-hand path. Follow the path until it meets a road, cross the road and continue along the path, taking the right-hand path at a second fork as it descends into trees.
The path then crosses Mark Lane. Take the track opposite (Clough Lane) which then begins to climb. At a fingerpost turn left into a field. Follow the path as it climbs steeply.
Take the paved path in the corner of the car
park. Follow the wide path until you reach a bridge and then turn left. Take a narrower path to your right and climb the steep steps to a stile. After climbing the stile, pause to catch your breath and admire the magnificent views over to Sheffield.
Follow the path to another stile which takes you into a field. Skirt the field to your right to a stile. Turn left along a track, passing playing fields on your right. Follow this track to the sports centre where you turn left along a lane that connects with Ringinglow Road.
turn left and at the bend in the road take a track on your left. Follow the track until you meet a made path to your right that now follows the Porter Brook.
Whilst keeping the water on your left follow the paths, sometimes crossing over roads, to emerge at Rustlings Road. Take the crossing and enter Endcliffe Park. Here there are toilet facilities and a café.
You leave Endcliffe Park by taking a path by the children’s play area. You may pause here to view a memorial to the crew of US war plane that crashed in WWII. Follow paths back to Rustlings Road. Cross the road and re-enter Bingham Park. Follow made paths, keeping the Porter on your right until you reach the Shepherd Wheel. This is a working museum of a former water powered grinding workshop and is open at weekends and bank holidays
Take the path behind the Shepherd Wheel buildings and follow it, keeping the Porter on your left until you reach the Dam Forge Café where there are again toilet and café facilities.
Again take the opportunity to pause, catch your breath and admire splendid views and pick out Sheffield landmarks.
Take the stile from the field and follow a path between two fields with horses, llamas and alpacas. Climb the stile at the end of the path and turn right for a short way along Ringinglow Road. At the Norfolk Arms pub (another opportunity for toilet facilities and refreshments) turn left along Sheepwell Road. At a fingerpost take the path on your left. Follow the path to a stile. Follow the path as it descends through trees through the Limb Valley and eventually returns to the car park at Whirlow Brook Hall.
