Promoting social inclusion to adults in Rotherham and Dearne Valley

Socialising without the stress

Every person, no matter their needs or position in society, should have the right to feel part of, build relationships in, and enjoy their community.

However, ill health, mobility and age-related factors can mean many people become socially excluded through no fault of their own, feeling out of place or left out.

Giving lonely and isolated people in Rotherham something to look forward to each week, Rotherham Social Days work with the elderly and disabled to reconnect them into society through weekly trips out and social activities. Started by former carer, Judith Twynham, Rotherham Social Days provides a dedicated door-to-door service helping those who may be housebound or unable to drive or use public transport to feel part of the community again.

Working with mainly the disabled and elderly, Judith and her team understand the pressures families can face helping care for their loved-ones; with work and family commitments plus trouble perhaps getting relatives in a car, it can be difficult for families to spend time outside of the four walls. With a wheelchair-friendly minibus, you can be picked up for visits without the stress of getting there on your own – great for those who may struggle on their feet or have no confidence in being out alone.

Rotherham Social Days’ visits become the focal point of many of their clients’ weeks, giving them some structure and routine with happy times to look forward to, surrounded by friends they make along the way. Whether its trips to museums to

build on a historic interest or garden centres for a spot of shopping, stops at cafes for tea and cake or a run to the coast for fish and chips; each week is different with rota-based timetables also including activities such as bingo or armchair aerobics for rainy days.

With social exclusion being said to increase the chance of mental illness, depression and low self esteem, getting out and about not only helps reduce the anxiety and psychological stress of being lonely, but also helps improve cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, awareness and reasoning by keeping both your mind and body active.

Having experience within the home care industry, Judith and her team are all fully qualified and trained to support a range of health needs and conditions such as urostomy wearers, people living with Parkinson’s disease or recovering from a stroke. The compassionate team are also Dementia Friends, helping retain independence of those with dementia and Alzheimer’s so they can still enjoy the things they love to do without worry.

For those assessed as having social care needs by the local authority, Rotherham Social Days has become a council-recommended facility for those looking to use their Direct Payments to help them enjoy community resources.
