WINNER: Portsmouth ‘A city that is aiming to create a great waterfront economy, linking its historic past with a culture-led regeneration to form an exciting future.’

Portsmouth City Council leader councillor Donna Jones said: “Being Pompey born and bred it is a huge honour to receive this award. We have worked really hard in the past three to four years to create a new vision.”

Aspirational plans for improved travel links, new homes and better educational provision were now underway, she noted.

Driving an income-generation strategy throughout council departments had also been key – she highlighted the new Dunsbury Business Park and £3.5 million Emirates Spinnaker Tower advertising deal – in re-branding Portsmouth nationally and internationally.

USSP has become a sought-after location for high-tech SMEs in the region. Collaborative spaces abound, and the attractive physical environment has helped create what the science park calls an ‘innovation ecosystem’. USSP’s property strategy focuses on ‘facilitating serendipity’ – creating an environment where entrepreneurs can meet, interact and collaborate.

made everyone smile but, in reality, the company’s ethos is rooted in the complementary characters of their founding architects. Ray Stride was a stickler for detail, buildability and process, whereas Gerry Treglown was a socially adept, intuitive, creative powerhouse. Together they enshrined a culture of mutual respect and trust; a spirit that lives on in the practice today.

In 2011, aged 21, Chris Schutrups set up this mortgage broking business from his bedroom using his last £10,000 of savings. Today, the £2m-plus turnover business making a gross profit of nearly £1m, has seven offices throughout the south and London, employs 55 people, and is growing sales at more than 70%. “It was genuinely a real surprise to win tonight. We came planning simply to enjoy a great local property event within our industry. This is an acknowledgement of my team and their great efforts. It’s very little to do with me.”
