Heart of Kent

Hospice is encouraging people to save up

their old £1

coins to donate to the charity before the familiar round pound ceases to be legal currency from 15 October 2017.

The campaign, coined Coins for Care, is asking members of the public to dig out their piggy banks and loose change jars, search their wallets and purses, and scour the backs of their sofas to help support local people with terminal illnesses.

According to the Treasury, people have already returned 800 million of the old £1 coins and by midJuly there were more new coins in circulation than old ones. Which is why Heart of Kent Hospice is encouraging people to start collecting now.

According to Sarah Pugh, Chief Executive at Heart of Kent Hospice: “£4 in every £5 we spend on caring for people with terminal illnesses comes from the generosity of our local community. We depend on them every bit as much as they do on us, that’s

why we hope the public will get behind the Hospice and make their old £1 coins really count.”

Supporters will be able to save up their pounds and donate them either through one of Heart of Kent’s 14 charity shops, at Heart of Flavour Café, in Maidstone, by bringing them into the Hospice in Aylesford, or taking them to official collectors in Fremlin Walk on 9th September.
