A Mental Health Resource Connection for Families in Maine S
arah was concerned about her adult son. He had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was hospitalized. After he was released from the hospital,
he began treatment in his community, returned to work and seemed to be coping. But Sarah had two sets of concerns: What should she do if another crisis occurred and how could she cope with the realities of an adult child living with mental illness? Her world had changed suddenly and inexplicably, and she needed guidance and support.
Sarah called Family Hope looking for answers and help. She joined the family centered Family Navigator Support Program and met with a licensed mental health professional who helped her work through her challenges. She gained a greater understanding of the services available to her son, learned how to identify the signs that her son may be heading for another crisis, and what to do if that happened. She was referred to a therapist who helped her work on her own feelings and learn to better handle the changes to her and her family’s life that mental illness had brought.
“I felt for the first time that I was no longer alone, trying to juggle all of my own feelings, while staying strong for my son and other family members. I feel better able to connect with services for my son and am learning to cope better with my daily life. I thought I was drowning until I reached out to Family Hope. They understood what my family was going through and they knew how to support me through this.”
Every day, many families like Sarah's face an overwhelming chal- lenge when someone they love develops a mental health issue. Ev- ery year, one in five people in Maine lives with a diagnosable men- tal illness, and the impact on their families can be overwhelming.
Established in 2012, Family Hope was founded by Donna Betts as a passionate response to her own family’s struggles; she quickly discovered she was not alone in facing the hurdles and barriers of working with disconnected mental health resources in Maine.
Family Hope is dedicated to educating, providing encouragement, and identifying resources to aid family members and friends help someone they care about who is living with mental illness. They are supported entirely by private donations. For more information visit
