PERFECT SOLUTION FOR COMMON AILMENT

By Miriam Luff, Earex Brand Manager

Whether caused by excessive earwax production or overactive wax-producing glands, earache and earwax build-up are common problems, particularly in children.

As parents and carers prepare for the back to school season, it’s important to ensure that children’s ears are in optimum health. Loud environments can aggravate ear pain and untreated ear problems can have an adverse effect on concentration levels and learning*. However, with Earex, most common earache and earwax related problems can be treated without the need to see a doctor.

Earex has recently introduced Earex Pain Relief Ear Spray to help calm, soothe and reduce pain. There are other ear drops, sprays and treatments on the market; however, Earex identifi ed a consumer need for an effective all-in-one pain relief solution. Earex Pain Relief Ear Spray is a triple action formula which has anti-infl ammatory, antiseptic and antibacterial benefi ts. No other branded ear care product provides these benefi ts in-one, making the spray an exclusive addition to the ear care market.

Understanding the new Earex product range and specifi cally the pain relief properties will help pharmacists advise the best ear care treatment. Earex Pain Relief Ear Spray is a new, unique product containing a carefully-selected blend of plant oils and extracts,

together with bisabolol, which is taken from the essential oil of the chamomile plant, known for its healing properties.

This combination of ingredients has been chosen for their antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-infl ammatory properties which work together to relieve pain, infl ammation and treat earache.

Good category management will help ensure products providing effective ear pain relief are available, without the need to see a doctor. The new range of ear care solutions from Earex provides consumers with a greater choice of easy to use products that will provide care to the whole family. Earex Pain Relief Ear Spray and Olive Oil Ear Drops can both be used by children aged fi ve and upward and are suitable for children under fi ve following medical diagnosis.

At present, the ear care market has increased by 10.9 per cent year on year, with a value of £20 million*. To best capitalise on this growth pharmacists should look to stock new products that target a range of ear problems.

Earex offers a range of remedies to tackle common concerns such as hearing loss, earwax build up or ear pain. The new Earex range, featuring best-seller Earex Advance Ear Drops*, alongside new additions Earex Pain Relief Ear Spray and Earex Olive Oil Ear Drops, has been developed to help consumers suffering with ear pain and discomfort to continue their lifestyles, unaffected and undisrupted.

THE NPA IS COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING MEMBERS BEING ABLE TO ACCESS BUSINESS ANALYSIS TOOLS TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDEPENDENT

COMMUNITY PHARMACY.

Many Scottish NPA members have already gained valuable business insight by accessing the free NPA Pharmacy Performance Marker (PPM). The NPA PPM is a simple PDF that provides benchmarking with local pharmacies highlighting business performance in one NHS area using three easy to read graphs. NPA PPMs for NHS income, Minor Ailment Service and Chronic Medication Service registrations are available.

The NPA is now also offering a new annual subscription service at a heavily-discounted rate to Scottish NPA members, called Local Market Insight which can enable you to understand your NHS business fully.

The Local Market Insight service provides monthly reports on your NHS items and service activity for your pharmacy and your identifi ed local competitors. The report also identifi es GP surgery dispensing locations and patient type analysis for NHS services. The Local Market Insight service has the potential to enable NPA members to get ahead of their local competition, focus on actions which can grow their business and, importantly, monitor the results of their actions as well as dynamic changes in their local market place on a monthly basis.

For more information on how the NPA can support your independent community pharmacy business, see www.npa.co.uk/services/business- support

Patient Safety Improvement is high on everyone’s agenda, and the NPA has released new resources which can be used to minimise the risk of the common dispensing errors involved with selecting inhalers and insulin from generic prescriptions. Both resources are ideal to facilitate patient safety discussions with pharmacy staff and other local health professionals. Another useful resource is the NPA Patient Safety Incident report for both Scotland and England, which identifi es the common or signifi cant errors and near misses and supports improving your procedures to minimise errors. Remember the NPA online error and ‘near miss’ reporting tool for Scottish members provides a quick, systematic mechanism for recording the contributing factors and resulting actions by all staff involved in patient safety incidents. Visit www.npa.co.uk/information- and-guidance for all patient safety topics.

The next NPA member forum will be on Tuesday 5 September at MacDonald Inchyra Hotel, Falkirk from 10am. The forums offer the opportunity for members to engage in direct discussion with Lead Pharmacy organisations with plenty of time for networking and in depth discussion of current independent pharmacy developments.

Please do not hesitate to contact Janice on j.oman@npa.co.uk if you have any issues you would like to raise.
