WOMEN IN PHARMACY
WITH EIGHT OUT OF THE TEN PLAUDITS AT THE RECENT SCOTTISH PHARMACIST AWARDS GOING TO FEMALES, SP TAKES A LOOK AT WHY SCOTTISH PHARMACY ATTRACTS - AND PRODUCES - SO MANY STRONG AND DYNAMIC WOMEN.
‘GIRL POWER’ DOMINATES IN SCOTTISH PHARMACY W
hen Dolly Parton said that, ‘If your actions create a legacy that inspires others
to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are an excellent leader,’ she could well have been talking about the women who make Scottish pharmacy the progressive profession that it is.
The recent Scottish Pharmacist Awards were, once again, a clear indication that the industry is safe in the hands of a plethora of women; from the pharmacy leaders, who guide the profession, to pharmacists and their teams, who drive it forward on a

daily basis in their communities; a fact that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the current Chief Pharmaceutical Officer, Rose Marie Parr.
‘When I came into this post,’ she told SP, ‘I found it very positive to see that there were so many females in leadership roles. At the moment in Scotland, the Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Dental Officer are all female, so I think that there’s something about women in Scotland being trailblazers. It’s certainly great to see that we have reached such a level of equity, but I think the main role
that we have to play is in acting as role models for those coming into the profession. I’d like to see more female contractors showing how our business models allow women to do so much within pharmacy. I know plenty of contractors who are mothers, business women and so much more, and it’s vital that female business acumen is recognised.’
The fact that many female pharmacists and contractors also have families is also recognised – and celebrated by Leyla Hannbeck, the Chief Pharmacist with the National Pharmacy Association (NPA).
‘I have two daughters, and I want them to look at me and say ‘I can do whatever I want in life’. I know many professional pharmacists, who have clearly demonstrated that we can achieve great things.
‘I think the fact that there are so many
‘I’m delighted to see that there are more and more women taking on more responsibility and accountability in pharmacy. We have worked very hard to achieve what we have and I think that’s because we’re more focused. I think that makes us more determined to go that extra mile.
