TIDAL TESTING FACILITIES

be concentrating predominantly on the new Tidal Technology Center at Grevelingendam, to be unveiled in 2018.

STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY CENTER

This state-of-the-art Technology Center for wave & tidal energy has unprecedented facilities but what is so ingenious is the fact that it is continuing in the innovative vein – since all those years in 1953 – creating a new industry of hydropower, located in the Southwestern part of the country, in fact renovating and redeveloping the syphon activated sluice gates of all those years ago.

The facility will feature three test channels into which turbines, mills and their components may be tested, certified and demonstrated. The set- up is ideal for monitoring the impact of tidal energy facilities on morphology; tidal flow patterns, environmental impact and a host of other variables. Menno goes on to say that the Tidal Technology Center will purchase and operate four demonstration turbines. These turbines will also be available to research institutes and universities for independent research.

THE CLEVER BIT

The Sluice – allows the channels through the dam to open – as a result of this renovation it will allow the re-oxygenation of the water – a win-win situation!

STANDARDISED AND EASY ACCESS FOR TESTING Turbines are encompassed within a standard crate (almost like boxes) proving efficient installation and all electrical systems hence are standardised affording efficiency of exchange.

The facility invest in monitors for water speed, fish monitoring, a plethora of systems available to the clients/ developers when testing to determine the performance.

Menno goes on to say that some of the Partners are able to monitor fish mortality rate and within a controlled

TIDAL TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT The development is priority over production and it is with this in mind that whenever there is an available slot they welcome clients and would remove their own turbines.

The global possibilities gained by this Flagship Technology Center are limitless, by the very fact that the uniqueness of other laboratories may be restricted; no such restrictions here from the small test onshore to large offshore installations.

and very accurate speed, registering the power curves determining high quality and accurate data.

POWER OUTPUT

When not in use by clients, the channels of the Technology Center will have four 0.5 to 1.0MW turbines installed for the purpose of demonstrating these technologies and generate electricity for the people in the region. It is estimated that the demonstration turbines will generate electricity for 2,000 households in the region.

INTERESTING FISH FACTOID There are very strict regulations, turbines of the old school design ruined goodwill (mortality of 10- 20/30%) so it has been back to the drawing board to achieve 0.1%. This is now an achievable level and with new technology and innovation the possibilities of furthering this are a focus.

The financing of this phenomenally sophisticated centre is completed, permits are issued and – to achieve that 0,1% --> 0,1 - 0,5% is expected to be finalised by the time this publication reaches our readers’ desks in August 2017.

Menno continues:“That the realisation is amazing, there is only one restriction – no persons are allowed on the water barriers during stormy seas, so there are restrictions from 1st October to 1st April – hence all systems will be in place and finalised by 2018.”

HIGH RISK ENVIRONMENT In a high risk environment Menno goes on to say: “That it is important to invest in development, to mitigate the risks working with good partners - this is the foundation and allows the risks to be a known quantity, there is a need in the market – this is the beauty with working in collaborative partnerships.”

There are currently seven partners in the company with 50 people working in the team… to summise (as time contraints were dictating our discussions coming to a close he concludes: “…to create a long term market and solid technologies, have good competitive systems upholding high standards and fast tracking development in the world of hydropower.”

IN A NUTSHELL

Of course I am just literally making the smallest of ripples to the surface of what BT Projects have achieved and are continually working on. I would liken this article to an aperitif, this is to whet the appetite as it were and we will be following their story in the forthcoming issues with fascination and anticipation.
