TIDAL TESTING FACILITIES OFFSHORE TESTING INSHORE AND

The Dutch Marine Energy Centre is a not-for-profit network organisation providing consultancy and testing services to the Dutch marine energy sector, covering the entire product development lifecycle

By building strategic partnerships, DMEC aims to accelerate the introduction of new products and innovative concepts to the market.

TWO SITES

DMEC manages two tidal test sites, one inshore site in the sluice gates of the Afsluitdijk, and one offshore site at Marsdiep. Both locations are well-suited to test tidal devices ranging from TRL 6 to 9, and are part of the European test site infrastructure connected to the MaRINET2 and FORESEA projects. The Centre provides customised services depending on the clients’ strategy and device specifications, including logistics, engineering, testing and permitting support.

DEN OEVER The inshore test site in Den Oever is located in two ducts of the Afsluitdijk, in an existing sluice that discharges water from the IJsselmeer to the Wadden Sea twice a day. Flow speeds can reach up to 4.5 m/s and are accurately predictable. Because of its inland location, the test site is well accessible, making installation, operation and maintenance relatively easy and cost effective. The test site has been operational since 2008.

MARSDIEP The offshore test site in Marsdiep is situated in open water that experiences bidirectional tidal flows of 1 m/s to 2 m/s. The berth is close to the harbours of Den Helder and NIOZ (Texel), and is connected to the grid by an umbilical. The test site has been operational since 2015.

DMEC helps developers select the test site best fitting their needs. It therefore collaborates with other facilities across the Netherlands, including MARIn, Deltares, NIOZ and Tidal Technology Center Grevelingendam.
