WAR ON THE CATWALK The queens from Season 9 ofRuPaul’s Drag Race are finished with the VH1
show and now they’re out and about and taking no hostages during their raucous, live stage show tour. Season 9 winner, Sasha Velour, as well as Shea Coulee, Aja, Alexis Michelle and Nina Bonina Brown, along with hostess with the mostess, Trinity Taylor, give you more of the bawdy, outrageous antics that made Season 9 such a fantastic free-for-all of fun. Here are some of our favorite queen quotes: Sasha’s was, “Mommy is taking you to church for the first time?” Shea’s on the other hand was, “Michelle is so Jersey, her idea of classical music is Lisa Lisa.” Aja’s snarky remark took on religion, “I’m an Illuminati princess, they tried to silence me and I’m like, no bitch I’m still gonna talk.” When describing herself, Alexis Michelle said this, “I am all about body, curve, swerve, glamour, class, a little touch of prostitute, and of course, mug.” Nina Bonina Brown introduced herself thusly, “I’m Nina, Bo’nina, Banana, Fofana, Osama, Bin Laden Brown! Boom boom boom boom!” Adding later in the season, “Somebody has to be the messy one!” Trinity Taylor on the other hand, explained her lack of facial expression this way, “I have 50 units of Botox in my face, I don’t know what y’all want from me.” All examples of what you can expect from the dialogue and performances, set for the Balboa Theatre stage onFriday, August 11! of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play that tells the story of a wounded family unraveling at the age of innocence and at the point of no return. Beatrice is a 1960s, embittered single mother, whose home life resembles a complete hell rather than a home for her two daughters. Tillie, the youngest, is ever resilient and finds her own way of connecting to the outside world. She is a keeper of rabbits, dreamer of atoms, true believer in life, hope, and the effect of gamma rays on man-in-the-moon marigolds. “I’m thrilled to be working on a play that has contributed so much to the landscape of American theatre. It’s right up there with the work of Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller,” says Director Rob Lutfy. “Because of its poetic and intense nature, it’s also a very meaty piece for actors.”The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in- the-Moon Marigoldsruns fromWednesday, August 30 through Sunday, September 24at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town San Diego.LGBT Out Night is scheduled forWednesday, September 6, at which you can enjoy a pre-show mixer before the performance. HAMLET Child, you thought your family had drama… Part revenge thriller, part ghost story, this psychological drama is a political epic and family saga, packed in one drama-filled night. Unforgettable characters and deeply theatrical, Hamlet is ripe with world-famous, memorable lines. The Prince of Denmark comes home from college to find his father dead, his mother remarried to his uncle and a spine-chilling apparition roaming the palace grounds. “The privilege of directingHamlet at The Old Globe is deeply meaningful to me and I’m thrilled and honored to do it,” said Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. “The play is endlessly fascinating, puzzling and rewarding and experiencing it in the hands of brilliant actors is one of the great thrills that live theatre can deliver. The company assembled in San Diego this summer is simply breathtaking—full of talent, imagination, and power—and I cannot wait to share their work.” Hamlet takes placeSunday, August 6 through Sunday, September 10, in the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre inside the Old Globe Theatre complex in Balboa Park. KILL LOCAL Abigail and her sister Sheila are embedded in their mother’s small family business. For Sheila, the job used to be a source of joy and exhilaration, but now she’s questioning everything.
