desert briefs by sasha scarlett Now for some special events: August in Palm Springs is warm, warm, warm, so be
sure to pack your lightest wares and bring on the air conditioning. Because this is low season, most visitors rely on local, weekly events and the club scene is alive with great options. Last month, I shared my favorite drag events, so let’s look at other options for August.
I’m going to share my faves by the day of the week: Mondays begin the process when you can check out Karaoke with Keisha at the Hacienda. You will be amazed at the number of great singers in the Coachella Valley and this is a lovely spot.
thehacienda.com Taco & Tequila Tuesdays take place atWang’s in the Desert. Wang’s has both an indoor and outdoor space and is one of my favorite Palm Springs watering holes.
wangsinthedesert.com Tuesdays also offer a Latin Night at Escape Palm Springs (with free tacos). Feel free to leave your clothes at home (or at least in their locker room) and enjoy the great sunshine. Nothing beats a sexy, naked man eating a taco – literally!
escapepalmsprings.com Hump days get humpier duringWednesday Movie
Nights at Chill Bar. Join your fellow Coachella Valley film buffs and watch anything from film classics to the latest hit TV series…the camaraderie is always terrific.
chillbarpalmsprings.com Wednesday also offers aVIP Night at Riviera Palm Springs and it’s a great way for visitors to be treated like locals. Fab prices and the bar and pool spa are glamorous and gorgeous.
rivierapalmsprings.com Palm Springs Village Fest happensThursdays in downtown. Part art walk, farmer’s market and all com- munity, it’s an event that is always fun and interesting. The best part? So many of the brick and-mortar bars and restaurants get in on the festivities, you can choose a great place like Lulu’s Restaurant or grab meat on a stick from one of the many food cart vendors. Delish.

Check out the great tribute show, Lost ‘80s Live atAgua Caliente Casino, featuring original artists from bands like Spandau Ballet, The Cutting Crew, Wang Chung and Naked Eyes. The evening features smash records like Always Something There to Remind Me, True, I Just Died In Your Arms and Dance Hall Days, sharing some great music while incorporating some acts you don’t see often. Sure to be totally awesome in an ‘80s kinda way!
hotwatercasino.com/entertainment Be sure to haveComic Con Palm Springs at the Palm Springs Conven- tion Center on your calendar Friday, August 25 through Sunday, August 27. Great art and graphic novels available here have never been better. But truly, this Comic Con is all about celebrity appearances, beginning with Marvel Comic Founder Stan Lee, Deadpool artist Rob Liefeld and a special concert performance by Lynda Carter, the original Wonder Woman (like I have to tell you that). More than 25,000 are expected to attend this year and since the new film,Wonder Woman, is the Summer’s number one movie, come and see the spectacle.
comicconpalmsprings.com. Of course, the bars along Arenas
Roadare always the perfect places to visit on any given weekend—and all week long for that matter—as are hotels and restaurants (pretty much all of them LGBTQ friendly). With nine cities comprising
the Greater Palm Springs area in Coachella’s Valley, you don’t have to focus just on Palm Springs: Check out Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indio and other smaller cities that offer an authentic desert experience. Hope to see you in August!
