The magnificent neoclassical exhibition venue of Thirlestaine Long Gallery is set in the elegant surroundings of Cheltenham Spa and the Cotswolds, making a visit to Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design the perfect excuse for a few days away in this unique and picturesque area.
Furniture aficionados and those who appreciate fine craftsmanship in decorative arts will have their appetites amply served once again this August at the largest and most eclectic exhibition of contemporary, bespoke, designer – maker furniture in the UK. The public is equally welcome at this outstanding event where they can meet renowned craftsmen face to face and learn about the intricacies of their trade.
This annual exhibition, now in its twenty-third year, gives up-and-coming new designers the chance to show their skills alongside famous names in the bespoke furniture business. The exceptional exhibition also includes selected works from leading artisans in disciplines such as sculpture, jewellery and silver that beautifully complement the furniture.
Discerning collectors make it a point to attend this exhibition, marvelling over the work on display and hoping to fall upon that new discovery that they can acquire, before its maker becomes a household name. Likewise, dealers in fine furniture and contemporary antiques travel from all parts of the country to view the work of makers both old and new, that they have been hearing about through the professional grapevine.
The exhibition boasts a fantastic array of around 300 unique and diverse pieces from over 70 workshops, with styles ranging from simple and sleek to flourishing and fancy there is plenty to suit all tastes. Stewards and a selection of exhibitors will be on hand to advise visitors, discuss the work exhibited and possible commissions. “We’ve seen a consistent feed of really talented makers coming through each year,” says director Jason Heap, who is hosting the exhibition for the eighth time this year. “It’s really inspiring to know that the passion for true craftsmanship is alive and well in the UK.” He also understands the opportunities for his visitors: “ Whether people come just to view the amazing work, or are here to enhance their homes with something unique and exceptional, they all seem to leave with wide eyes and wide smiles!”
