A Good Dentist Never Gets On Your Nerves!


Sensitive teeth affect many people with symptoms ranging from an occasional twinge that lasts for a few seconds to severe discomfort lasting several hours.


There are many reasons why this could occur: n Over Brushing - too much force or a hard-bristle toothbrush can wear down enamel and expose the dentine, causing sensitivity.


n Grinding your teeth (also known as Bruxism) - similarly wears down the enamel, again revealing the dentine, which leads to sensitivity.


n Gum disease – if you have gum disease, this causes inflamed gums, which pulls the tissue away from the tooth, which in turn, leaves areas of the tooth and root exposed.

The pain is usually sharp, sudden and shooting, and can occur in one or more teeth. This can become apparent when breathing cold air, brushing teeth, and whilst eating or drinking hot, cold, sweet and sour food or drinks.


Sensitivity can occur at any time; however, it is most common in people between the ages of 20 and 50 years old.


n Teeth Whitening - if you are whitening your teeth you may get some sensitivity from the whitening gel. It is very important you have a full dental check-up to make sure you are dentally fit – any tooth decay or gum issues MUST be treated before you start any whitening treatment.


WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF SENSITIVITY IN MY TOOTH?


Tooth sensitivity occurs when the dentine, the layer of tooth which is under the enamel, or the cementum layer of tooth which covers the root of the tooth is exposed.


The above picture shows the difference between normal teeth, and the effect on the teeth if you grind them. By grinding them on them, you can see that the enamel has been ground down and it is now a flat surface, which would expose the dentine and pulp horns (where all the nerve and blood vessels are), therefore resulting in sensitivity and possible pulpitis and eventual tooth abscess.naturally. This way there is less pain and minimal bleeding.


WHAT TO DO NOW? Even if you have sensitive teeth, make sure you do not neglect your daily oral hygiene routine. Just make sure that you use a medium bristled toothbrush, and try using a toothpaste that is designed for people who have sensitive teeth. You can also rub some of the sensitive toothpaste along the exposed area before going to bed, using a clean fingertip or cotton swab, to help reduce sensitivity. If the sensitivity is prolonged, it is advised that you seek your dentist to confirm the cause of the sensitivity.
