Around Hereford

Andy Black, Tourism Officer from Visit Herefordshire, details all there is to see and do in this beautiful Cathedral town

These are exciting times for the historic city of Hereford. Currently awaiting news on its bid for City of Culture 2021, the area is undergoing a renaissance with a new university due by 2019 (the first new university in the UK for over 30 years) plus nearly £750,000 worth of HLF funding as part of the Great Places scheme to develop communications in a rural area.

Besides the diverse offering of walking and cycling as you explore the verdant landscape, there is a huge amount to see within the historic city itself. From the newly re-imagined Black & White House museum in High Town, to the celebrated Cathedral with Mappa Mundi Exhibition, Chained Library & new Ascension window to commemorate the SAS links, there is more than enough to satisfy the most ravenous of culture vultures. If you prefer retail therapy rather than culture, albeit with a twist, then you need to discover the vibrant independent quarter in Church Street. The highly successful Old Market shopping development has brought a host of big names to the city.

Elsewhere, to satiate your appetite you have the equally delicious reataurants and coffee bars serving fine cuisine with local ingredients along with the boutique hotel splendour of Castle House. If you need to wash all this fine food down then look no further than The Cider Museum closely situated to learn where

all this drink actually came from.

No visit to the city is complete without a walk down to the iconic River Wye, soon to see more boats on it as it is utilised even further with plans for a river quarter, complete with canoeing access points being muted.

If even all this hasn’t expended your energy then why not take on the climbing wall in the new indoor installation at the nearby The Send at Skylon Park. All in all, there is something for everyone to enjoy whatever your tastes or ages.
