n Brush using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth – this will continue to remove plaque as well as treating the sensitivity

n Brush and floss or Tepe teeth twice a day, every day! n Be sure to clean all parts of the mouth, including the gum line and in between the teeth

n Avoid acidic foods and drink as they contribute to destruction of the enamel

n After brushing teeth, you should spit the excess fluid out rather than rinsing your mouth, as this way you have maximum uptake of fluoride

n DO NOT use mouthwash – many mouthwashes contain alcohol which can be erosive

STEPS TO TREAT AND PREVENT SENSITIVITY:

n Always use a medium bristled toothbrush – preferably an electric toothbrush

n When brushing your teeth, you should hold the brush-head at a 45-degree angle at the point where the gum and tooth meets. Hold over the area for 2-3 second before moving on to the next tooth. This should be done over each tooth on both the inner and outer surfaces. If you experience sensitivity to cold, you could try using warm water from the tap instead of cold water.

n Leave one hour after eating and drinking before brushing teeth because acidic food softens the enamel prisms, therefore the tooth brushing is very abrasive, so you would lose more prisms resulting in sensitivity.

n Using a fluoride toothpaste everyday helps with sensitivity by blocking the fluid movement in the dentinal tubules which prevents stimulation of the nerve fibres in the pulp of the tooth

n Avoid lip, mouth and tongue piercings as they cause enamel damage and result in sensitivity
