SpaTech Training is currently working with BISHTA to produce a holiday park hot tub management course. The course is designed around the contents of HSG282 and in addition will also promote industry best practice relating to safe use of hot tubs in a business setting. The course will take the form of three parts;

Chris goes on to explain that holiday parks often purchase directly from manufacturers and distributors and choose to have the hot tubs supplied only via curb side delivery with no professional installation or commissioning – all to keep costs down. Furthermore, the parks then sell these onto private buyers within their parks, and often without any form of handover or tuition with the owners.


BUYING DIRECT “We have a number of holiday parks around us and we have consumers calling into our store complaining of skin irritations and unpleasant water, only to find out they were unaware that they needed to treat the water as they were not told,” reveals Chris. “Secondly, a lot of holiday parks are not aware, or worse still, ignore the Health & Safety guidance that is published relating to hot tub use and control of Legionella in spa pools in business and commercial settings. This poses the greatest risk to the use of hot tubs, particularly in a business setting like a holiday park.” In accordance with regulations made by the Health & Safety Executive, regular testing of both pH and disinfection should be made at least three times a day and the results logged and kept for at least


Part one for park owners, managers and duty holders: This part will focus on educating risk holders on the risks of hot tubs, what to look for when selecting a suitable, fit- for-purpose hot tub. Part two for holiday park managers, supervisors and hot tub service staff: This part is aimed at informing staff nominated as ‘Responsible Persons’ of why certain procedures need to be adhered to and the risks and responsibilities of these people. Part three for hot tub service professionals: This part is aimed at training the hot tub industry professionals in the particulars of HSG282 so that they can supply and advise holiday parks properly.

These devices are not always installed into a hot tub at the point of manufacture and would therefore have to be retro-fitted at a later stage. Says Chris: “The release of HSG282 is very particular for all the right reasons, however, there were little or no hot tubs available on the market that ticked all of the criteria that HSG282 recommends. Now that the industry has taken time to digest the detail released in HSG282, we are starting to see manufacturers designing and producing hot tubs which will be fit for purpose and comply with
