Poolmark For Proud Pool Owners

The UK’s

authoritative guidance on swimming pools and spas

ABOVE: Greenvale Leisure Centre in Northern Ireland was the fi rst in the UK to receive the prestigious Poolmark award.

There are no laws about swimming pool water, no regulations, no British Standard. So how do you demonstrate to customers and colleagues that your pool is up to the mark? The answer is PWTAG and Poolmark. For over 30 years, the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) has published guidelines and books that have increasingly become accepted as the gold standard for pools and spas. Since 2012 there has also been a free online

Code of Practice that codifi es the information in PWTAG’s authoritative book Swimming Pool Water. It provides pool operators with a structured plan for the technical operation of their pool. And last year PWTAG introduced Poolmark, available only to pools that meet the Code of Practice. Poolmark certifi cation gives public assurance that your pool meets the essential healthy pool operational standards.

How To Get Poolmark

• Download the Code of Practice on pwtag.org.uk and check you’re in line with it; make any necessary adjustments.

• Read Swimming Pool Water for any background you need. • Check PWTAG’s online Technical notes to make sure there’s nothing new you’re not aware of. • Once you’re happy, download the Self-assessment form. Its 63 sections ask you to describe your pool’s operation and measure that against the Code of Practice.

PWTAG will then assess your completed form, and if it’s ok, £100 will be payable. You will then receive a Poolmark plaque, a certifi cate, and associate membership of PWTAG.

PWTAG is keen to cite that staff do have to be adequately trained to meet the Code of Practice and achieve Poolmark status. There are several hidden benefi ts behind the scheme too. New members will be sure that the pool is safe and comfortable for bathers – and this will be fully authenticated – plus users will have the reputation and authority of PWTAG behind them.

PEACE OF MIND

If anything does go wrong at the pool, you will be able to demonstrate - in court if necessary – that you were following the best available guidelines. Without this protection, you are vulnerable. With it, bathers can be assured – by you and by the Poolmark plaque – that the pool is approved. You can rely on the authority of the organisations that endorse PWTAG – Public Health England, Health & Safety Executive etc.
