Stars sign up for charity football

CELEBRITIES and Arsenal foot- ball stars are lining up for a char- ity match at Maidstone Football Ground on Sunday, July 23. Hoping to be picked for the

game will be the likes of Tony Hadley, from Spandau Ballet, co- median Russell Howard and Tommy Walsh, from Goundforce, who make up Arsenal’s Charity squad. They will take on a team from

Tesco.com in Aylesford, which is organising the event in aid of YOU- CANyouth cancer support charity, in East Malling, the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK. Tesco.com’s community cham-

pion Andy Hayward believes the event, which will include a raffle and charity auction, as well as music, will be a great day out. The home side will be selected

from the depot’s 1,400 staff at the Priory Park distribution centre, which serves online Tesco cus- tomers across Kent, with a fleet of 200 vehicles carrying deliveries to- talling more than £2m a week. Mr Hayward said: “We’re all re- ally excited about the event and

hoping the weather will be good. There’ll be plenty to see and do and we hope to beat last year’s total of £13,000.”

The game is

just one of the community events run by the Aylesford depot. It also distrib-

utes food and toiletries to the homeless in Maidstone each

week, via the Homeless Shelter in Knightrider Street and the Making a Difference initiative. Last year, the company gave help

to the homeless in Maidstone thought to top £100,000. Mr Hayward, who is also kit manager for Maidstone United FC’s first team, has persuaded the club to donate its ground for the event, for free. Tickets will be available on the

gate for £3 (adults) and £1 (children and concessions). Gates open at midday for a 1pm kick-off.

LARKFIELD Leisure Centre is among the latest batch of recipients of rewards being handed to businesses for keeping the area outside their premises spick and span. The firms signed up to the Larkfield Voluntary Litter Code, pledging to

keep their premises clean and tidy. Community judges visit the sites each month and award certificates to those who pass each inspection for 12 consecutivemonths. Kirstin Brinsted of Larkfield Leisure Centre and Jo Davies of the

centre’s Aqua Bar Café are pictured with Stuart Ollson (right), who founded the scheme, and David Thornewell, chairman of East Malling and Larkfield Parish Council.
