Road shut for blocked sewer

A ROAD in the centre of West Malling will be shut overnight until July 24 after concrete was poured into a sewer. Southern Water staff have been digging up the system in Police Sta- tion Road, which serves more than 200 homes, after specialist diamond cutting equipment shipped in from Germany failed to deal with the problem. The work began on Monday, July

10, and was expected to take two weeks, with the road closed between 8pm and 8am. This follows an extensive pro- gramme of work by SouthernWater to try to fix the issue without the need for a road closure. The firm said: “Unfortunately this has proved unsuccessful, due to the particularly strong grade of concrete that was used. It has caused irreparable dam- age.”

Kent County Council granted the closure order to allow the sewer to be dug out and replaced. Southern Water said it was not known who had caused the damage. A spokesman said: “Our teams will be working seven days aweek to com- plete the work as quickly as possible. The council recommended works take place overnight for public safety reasons.
