Travellers move in and close hall
ANURSERYschool and clubmem- bers had to abandon West Malling’s village hall after a nearby fieldwas taken over by travellers. The decision to close thewell-used
venuewasmade by the parish coun- cil because of the proximity of nearly a dozen caravans who moved on to the playing field in Norman Road. The parish council’s vice chairman
Cllr Richard Selkirk said: “We un- derstand that these travellers have been moved on from previous sites. “We made an early decision to
close the hall and notified everyone that all activities at the hall will be cancelled as a precaution.” He said the cost of the incursion
was likely to run into four figures, adding: “Aswell as legal costs, there will be the loss of nursery revenue, which has inconvenienced young families using the child care service. We apologise for this, but early ac- tion was needed and because of the closeness of the encampment to the hall we felt it would not be appro- priate to continue using it.” Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s (TMBC) legal team was

helping with the legal process to re- move the travellers. He added: “TMBC has been help-
ing us, but we are paying for that help and this will, ultimately, fall on the shoulders of council taxpayers.” He said the playing field would
not reopen until specialist contrac- tors had cleaned the site thoroughly. Cllr Selkirk said the parish council
was investigating how to secure the area in future after a locked gatewas breached. Downs Mail asked TMBC if there
is any way the legal process to get travellers to move on might be fast- tracked. The borough council’s di- rector of central services, Adrian Stanfield, said: “Ahigh percentage of the recent encampments in Ton- bridge and Malling have not been on land owned by the borough council, although we have been assisting parish councils in taking action. “The borough council has consis-
tently acted as quickly as the law al- lows to remove unauthorised occupiers from landownedeither by the borough council, or when acting on behalf of local parish councils.”
Cricketers pipped at post
LEYBOURNE Primary School came close to finishing as top team in the annual Tonbridge and Malling Kwik Cricket Festival. The team went home with the runner-up trophy after being beaten in
the final by Ightham Primary School. West Malling Primary School also went home with an award after being

The Ightham team went on to represent Tonbridge and Malling in the

downsmail.co.uk Tailor makes a 6” Mistake
If you were measured to have something tailor made for you, would you expect to be delivered shoes that are 2 sizes too small for you, or trousers 6 inches too big? Of course not. Yet thousands of people wear spectacle lenses that are incorrect by at least 17%. A recent European Optometry study showed that the average error by a trained optician measuring a person for varifocals was 5mm per eye. Even a 0.5mm error can cause eye-strain, It’s no wonder so many people have tried and failed to comfortably wear varifocal spectacles. Thousands more and swimming vision that these mis- measurements can cause. But why does this happen? You will probably remember that when most opticians measure you for
varifocals they mark the lenses using ruler measure the distance between your eyes. Buchanan Optometrists abandoned this inaccurate method 10 years ago, preferring instead to use a computerised measuring system that not only measures your pupil position to within 0.1mm but also takes into account several other measurements such as how the spectacle frame sits on your face. We are all different, so any frame you put on will sit differently. the distance the frame sits from your face, the angle of the frame, the curve of the frame, how your eyes work binocularly together. The end result? The most comfortable vision possible - or your money back.
UK are off-the-shelf designs with your prescription added to it - a crazy idea considering we all have different jobs, hobbies and lifestyles. Our varifocals are not off-the-shelf designs tailor made and completely individualised for you taking into account what you want to do with your lenses, your work, your lifestyle and leisure activities. Taking into account your precise computerised measurements and prescription.
