Pipe thief caused £10k house flood

A THIEF who robbed a property of its water tank and copper pip- ing, causing £10,000 of flood dam- age, has been jailed. Maidstone Crown Court heard

Luke Everhurst (pictured), from Saltings Road, Snod- land, and Darren Mc- Grath flooded a nearby house after smashing a window and getting into

the vacant property. Police were called to reports of

loud noises coming from the house and water flowing under the front door on March 9, 2016. They found that the tank and

pipes had been removed and there had been unsuccessful attempts made to remove the radiators. Police caught 27-year-old Ever-

hurst walking away from a pile of pipes in the middle of the garden. McGrath was found in a neigh- bouring garden. The stolen tank

and tools were recovered by offi- cers from an outbuilding. Both menwere arrested and later charged with burglary. Appearing at Maidstone Crown Court, Ever- hurst was sentenced to 14 months in prison, after denying the charge. McGrath, also 27 and formerly of WallisAvenue, Maidstone, pleaded guilty but failed to appear in court for sentencing. A warrant has now been issued for his arrest. Detective Constable Andy Julier

said: “Everhurst and McGrath broke into this property just days after the tenants moved out. They sought to strip it of every piece of metal they could get their hands on. They have caused damage cost- ing thousands of pounds to repair and considerable distress to the person who owned the property. “Whenwe arrested Everhurst his tracksuit bottomswerewet around the knees, even though theweather was dry. Forensic tests also later matched fragments of glass from the broken window with fragments recovered from a fleece Everhurst had been wearing, as well as a hat belonging to McGrath.”

Trust staff help others

BUILDINGS and gardens belonging to a charity for adults with learning disabilities have been given a fresh look, thanks to staff from Kings Hill developer Liberty Property Trust. They took the day off work to help out at Scotts in Tonbridge, where

they painted inside the homes and laid paving slabs in the gardens. The team were taking part in the annual Bill Rouse Day of Caring,

when Liberty’s more than 300 employees in the UK and US spend a day helping their communities in memory of the company’s founder Bill Rouse, who died in 2003. Scotts provide a safe and supportive environment for adults with learning disabilities. Its development centre offers a choice of courses to broaden horizons and teach key skills and there is also a residential home for 15 people, St Peter’s Row in Delarue Close and two houses in nearby Shipbourne Road, which provide supported independent living accommodation. Community fundraiser Denise Tucker said: “This is the second time

staff from Liberty have helped us out, which is great. Our residents were delighted to see the transformation.” Liberty’s managing director Andrew Blevins said: “The day allows us

to remember Bill Rouse in a way he would have liked and reminds us that we are part of amuch wider community.”
