CASE STUDY: SIMPLEWARE
Exeter software company Simpleware has significantly benefited from winning Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in 2012 and 2013. Simpleware’s software creates computer models
from 3D scans (for example MRI and CT), and is used around the world by major corporations to help understand everything from the human body to new materials and consumer products. In 2016 Simpleware became part of Synopsys, Inc., one of the world’s largest software companies, having steadily grown from a University of Exeter spin-out to a business with an international reach. Simpleware entered the Queen’s Awards as a way to
boost recognition of the brand and the company’s growing success in technological innovation and international sales. Applying for the award simply involved filling out a relatively short application form, before moving to the next stage of review and confirmation. This process led to a first Award for Innovation in 2012, and a subsequent Award for International Trade in 2013. The Awards were presented to Simpleware in ceremonies in Exeter, and company representatives were invited to receptions held at Buckingham Palace with HM the Queen. Since winning the Queen’s Awards, Simpleware has
enjoyed several key benefits. Customers recognise the Awards as a sign of quality, helping to add to the credibility and prestige of the brand, which has been particularly valuable when selling to non-UK customers. The Awards have also had some more unexpected benefits, such as a raised visibility for investment. Within the company, the Queen’s Awards contributed towards staff satisfaction and pride. Dr Philippe Young, MD of Simpleware, said: “This
really worked very well, particularly as most of our sales are exports, and in countries like Japan, the USA and India, there was a surprising amount of traction that we gained from having the Queen’s Awards.”
