6 • JULY 2017 • UPBEAT TIMES, INC. Mr. Eagle Eye: Of Men & Mice

Santa Rosa, CA. ~ Truly the best laid plans of men and mice don’t always turn out so nice on a golf course. Sometimes

we

find ourselves in awe of the natural beauty

Sometimes great

vibe

around. that is

short-lived. A putt for birdie on a tough, 176- yard par-3 from 14 feet slides by the hole some two feet and we miss the putt coming back. No par, no noth- ing; just a kick in the teeth from the golf gods as we walk away with bogey. Bad taste for sure. Like a pit-bull clinging to a bone we have a hard time let- ting go. Soon other mistakes follow, compounding our ag- ony. We holler an expletive against the gods, lashing out

from our pain. This is where the emotional body takes over and we become slave. It is neither sexy nor cool to be so trapped here where there seems no way out. Light gives way to a

brooding

darkness that hangs heavy over

our heads.

This rag- ing drag- on can

scorch the green grass- es of hope beyond rec- ognition. This dragon and our ego are closely aligned. The taming of this dragon should be our goal through medita- tion, mindfulness and the sub- tle practice of non-attachment. Lip-service in this arena won’t work because a disciplined, pre-game strategy is needed.

Taking one’s medicine never comes easily, especially after yet

another three-putt leads

to bogey or even worse. Last week Jason Day had two triple bogeys within a few minutes of each other. This kind of shoddy play led him and other luminar- ies to missing the cut at the US Open. To his credit he didn’t helicopter a golf club or curse the gods. So learning to slow down on a golf course clearly becomes the

solution.

Learning how to use our breath as a guide

can

us see that slow and steady

help wins

the race. Every step,

every shot, every breath has meaning and we should always be looking for the highest road possible no matter how good or bad we play. By taking full re- sponsibility for our words and actions we can begin to change the way we respond to adver- sity. This is true alchemy; the secret art of turning lead into gold.

When we have three-putted for the last time and are no lon- ger consumed by the dragon’s flames we will have arrived at our destination. We may not be breaking par but we may be breaking those rusted shackles which tie us down to old habits.

Santa Rosa, Ca. ~ Beer has been a pivotal part of cultivating civi- lizations.

As mankind advanced

enough to cultivate grains, beer was one of the products. Through fermenta- tion beer provided a safe drink- ing wa- ter.

these

Once civi-

lizations learned

to

cultivate grains, they

stayed put and societies were born. The monks called beer liquid

bread. Early colonials requested a brewer to be sent. Prohibition may have made alcohol illegal but the bath tub beer was born. Beer crosses generations and brings dif-

ferent cultures together. The im- pact of beer can easily have been every February as the pilgrimage of beer enthusiasts converge to Santa Rosa to pay hom- age to Pliny the Young- er.

In 1977 Jack McAuliffe started New Albion Brewing Company in Sonoma and is considered to have started the first Micro-Brewery. Russian River Brewing Company pays homage to that by proudly
