‘Summer Guide & Whats UP!

Healdsburg, CA. ~ On Saturday, July

15, the Healdsburg Water

Carnival returns to Healdsburg’s Veterans Memorial Beach, bring- ing old-time summer fun for all ages. Presented by Sonoma Coun- ty Regional Parks and the Sonoma County Regional Parks Founda- tion, the carnival benefits the Rus- sian River Water Safety Patrol, which provides loaner life vests and water safety information to

river visitors throughout the sum- mer.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Wrist- bands will be sold for $10 and allow the wearer to slide on the Zoom Flume, take a boat ride on iconic Sandy the Swan, and par- ticipate in barrel races in the river and face painting. Parking is $7 or free for Regional Parks members with their parks pass.

ers climb. No ropes needed, but one heck of a lot of endurance. What counteracted the burning of the calves and thighs were the views and continuous scenes of water, mountain, clouds and sheer pure landscapes. No won- der John Muir loved this place so much! Suddenly, there’s re- ally no pain, just pure excite- ment for what’s around the next corner. Like Nevada Fall for instance (to the right). I took a lot of breaks, be- cause I did not want to miss all the glorious photographic opportuni-

ties that arose around nearly every cor- ner and I needed to catch my breathe. Finally, aſter four hours there

was flat land! Water was run- ning low in our packs so we took out our handy hand pump purchased from REI and re- filled up our camel-back back packs with delicious fresh snow melt. I brought a pack that was just about 30 lbs. No wonder my legs were working over- time! All seven of us that hiked traded this pack from time to time, so it took a bit of stress off my legs. Te flat area we had reached is called the Silver

phenomenal display of stars. We passed this area and con-

tinued up the steep incline. A new set of switchbacks began. Meandering through the path upward were 1000’s of huge ponderosa pines that had to be hundreds if not up to 1000’s years old or more! Some lay strewn across the path from Mother Nature’s

that the incline was a lot easier from here on out…but we were still over 4 miles away from the top. Ten the switchbacks be- gan. Just south of Half Dome, you pass Little Yosemite Valley and the sand ends. People usu- ally camp for the night in Little Yosemite Valley then tackle Half Dome, a leisurely 3-1/2 mile jaunt. Evidently the camp is at 6100 feet and has 3 or four massive fire pit areas where ten- ter’s can come together and en- joy the evening looking at the

steeper. Along the final three miles,

the trees thin out and

new animals and birds begin to appear, like for example, a young dear who could care less I was there, only 20 feet away, meandering back and forth across the trail, and a grouse who practically charged me and my friends with its display of

feathers splayed out like a

protective turkey a individual might encounter right here in Sonoma County…but much smaller! Ten the sub-dome(this is

where you sit and rest) finally appeared and I sat down next to a couple of my fellow hik- ers...grateful I had made it this far! I ate a snack, drank wa- ter and slowly came back to earth. Ten my thighs started to cramp. I rolled over & stood up immediately and stretched and was much better, until I looked up and there were the final 400 feet of cables. I sat there a few minutes. My friends had already leſt and were up the cables and on top. In those short few moments I sat, my mind saying, ‘Paul, you’re here, you’ve got to finish the hike to the top!’ I was a bit afraid I had ... continued on page 11
