‘Summer Guide & Whats UP! Musical Notes in Sonoma County

SONOMA COUNTY, CA. ~ “Dance and movement have been a lifelong investigation for me: the internal attention of lis- tening and feel- ing that sparks intentions to move, and

leads to commit- ment to action,”

explains choreographer,

Nancy Lyons. She contin- ues, “ I am endlessly fas- cinated with noticing the unique patterns of how people stand, walk and gesture; the ease of squir- rels executing a grand jete; the deep plies of a cat about to pounce; and the choreographic wonders of mos- quitoes in flight. It’s such a giſt to experience living in a moving body in a world in motion, mov- ing and being moved.” Lyons joined SoCo Dance Te-

ater aſter she retired from an illustrious 4-decade career in

dance. She is Professor Emerita of Dance at Sonoma State Uni- versity.

careers and families. We share a love of the art of dance and a genuine respect and pleasure in working together.” Regarding working with a

multi-generational dance group, Lyons expresses, “I love work- ing with the different strengths of a wide span of ages. Younger danc- ers can have the innate capacities for strength, flexibility, speed, wild- ness while mature dancers can have a deep presence, clarity of intention, economy of motion, and integra- tion of mind/body. Ev- eryone brings the joy of where they are in their journey to the table to commune with one an-

through the arts and contribut- ing to the diversity and vitality of dance in our county. Our mem- bers range from seasoned per- formers who have been profes- sional dancers in New York and San Francisco to younger danc- ers balancing performance with

other, much like a family.” SoCo Dance Teater’s current

project, “From the Poetry House and Into the Heartwood,” can be enjoyed by audiences at the Se- bastopol Center for the Arts on Saturday, July 15 at 4:00 & 7:30 and on Sunday, July 16 at 4:00.

Lyons says, “Te spirit of this performance is a celebration of who and where we are, here in Sonoma County, honoring the redwoods through music, dance, art and poetry, in community with one another.” Te dance was initially per-

formed as a site-specific piece in and around Bruce Johnson’s colossal, salvaged old-growth redwood sculptures in Root 101, the outdoor sculpture garden

at Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Lyons transformed the piece by including videography from the original performance and adapting it for the Sebasto- pol Center for the Arts; which includes Elizabeth Carothers Herron reading excerpts of her work, Te Poet’s House.
