Long-awaited development in Melbourne
F
or over 150 years, Port Melbourne’s Station Pier has welcomed generations of immigrants and millions
of visitors from around the world. Today, Station Pier continues to act as a transport hub, allowing visitors to access Melbourne via interstate ferries and international cruise ships. Around Station Pier, Port Melbourne has seen significant change from its maritime industrial past and is now a highly desirable place to live, work and visit. The Port Melbourne foreshore is now lined with high rise apartments that extend from New Beach all the way to the Bay Street Activity Centre and beyond. The long-awaited development
of 1-11 Waterfront Place by Action Group Australia is now ready to move ahead via Waterfront Place Pty Ltd – four years after plans were first submitted in 2013.
Waterfront gateway The site is located at Melbourne’s waterfront gateway and is at the focal point of the traditional vessel entry point to Melbourne. It is located in Beacon Cove adjacent to Station Pier and the terminus for the light railway connecting Port Melbourne with the central business district of Melbourne. The proposal

is for a mixed use development with residential dwellings, serviced apartments and a mix of food, beverage and lifestyle retail outlets. Action Group Australia has
stated that Waterfront Place demonstrates a significant opportunity to revitalise a site that is strategically located next to Station Pier with easy access to central Melbourne. However, the future had
previously looked uncertain for this attractive development until the local council introduced new policy and planning controls in 2014, which

were subsequently approved by the Minister for Planning the following year. Having been involved with the original project, long-serving Fender Katsalidis Architects (FKA) came up with revised plans that featured a number of new amenities.
Foreshore location Private residential dwellings in three sculpted residential towers have been located and
designed to capitalise on the Port Melbourne foreshore location, which will provide future residents with excellent views and direct access to public open space on the foreshore, convenient high frequency public transport, shopping and other community facilities and services. Covering an area of 5,487 sq m, the project will include approximately 175 dwellings, ranging from one- bedroom to three-bedroom apartments and penthouses There will also be provision for 244 car parking spaces across two basement levels, 184 sq m of ground floor retail space and a publicly accessible plaza and North-South laneway. Amenities will comprise a golf simulator, fitness studio, lounge, lap pool, library, business room, dining facility and events room. With new guidelines in
force, Waterfront Place is once again hoping to become an integral part of the larger redevelopment of the Port Melbourne Waterfront Precinct. Action Group Australia anehme@actiongroupaustralia.
