REPUBLIC OF SINGPORE 99
Republic of Singapore
REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE
Surface area: 716.1 square kilometres Population: 5,750,000 (January, 2017) Capital city: Singapore is an island city-state Official languages: Chinese (Mandarin), English, Malay and Tamil Currency: Singapore Dollar (SGD) GDP per capita: $56,700 (2017) Fact: Singapore’s name comes from ‘Singa Pura’, which means Lion City in Sanskrit. According to legend, a Sumatran Prince called Sang Nila Utama landed on Temasek (Singapore’s old name) and saw a lion, which is called ‘Singa’ in Malay, so he gave the island a new name, ‘Singapura’ However, the Prince was almost certainly mistaken as lions never existed in Singapore and he probably saw a Malayan Tiger, which still exists in neighbouring Malaysia, but has long been extinct in Singapore.
The ONE°15 Marine Club in Sentosa Cove, Singapore, was named for its location one degree and 15 minutes North of the Equator.
