Rule Change for 2018 Season Non Pro Conditions were changed with the
elcome to the June issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. Enjoy our Feed & Stable Spotlight to learn about some of the great products available to ease the care of your
horse. There are so many new products out in the market, it’s hard to keep track of them. Hopefully, this will help point you to some of your favorite products or introduce you to some new ones. There was quite a bit of uproar and discussion on Facebook
regarding the new revisions to the NRHA Non-Pro eligibility def- initions (see box on right). Reading through the vagueness of the rule, it was obvious that this was a special agenda vote. What was- n’t considered were the current rules in place for Green Riders and Rookies as well as the needs of small barns showing multi- ple horses in the same class to be able to have available riders hop on the horses and warm them up. Enforcement of this rule was also discussed. It was really great to see how a contingent of non-pros came
together, wrote up a repeal, and sent it out to the association non- pros to vote. All votes were sent to the head of the non-pro com- mittee. The write up was concise, gave multiple examples of how as written would become a burden to non-pros as well as point out how this rule negates the previous rules of no horse ownership for Green Riders and Rookies. It goes to show that you can voice your opinion, ask for change, without becoming a mob.

approval of 27-01-18. The largest change came from the addition of this text: o Even without remuneration, a Non Pro
may not train or participate in mounted prepa- ration of a horse not owned or leased by the non pro or the non pro's immediate family, at or for, a show. It is the intent of the NRHA to limit the ability of a non pro to assist a trainer or other person in the training or preparation of the horse while mounted for a show if that horse is not owned or leased by the non pro or the non pro's immediate family.
While in the past, repeals on a final rule have
been mute. However, there are a large number of non-pros hoping that their concerns are addressed and the new rule either repealed or clarified to re- move the vagueness and guess work from it. There are certainly many other organizations that also have non-pro eligibility rules that could be drawn on for clarity. Meanwhile the rules remain the same, and the show goes on. See ya in the pen. w
