Breakfast with Ed James

Ed Sheeran right now is the man who has everything! He's just done two nights at the Barclaycard Arena as part of a sell-out world tour.

His album ‘Divide’ has broken streaming records and nearly crashed Spotify. He's been the first artist to have 8 songs in the top 10. He's just had a portrait hung in the National Portrait Gallery. He's recorded a cameo in the world’s most watched TV show Game of Thrones. And on top of all of this, he's revealed he's writing an average of 5 songs a day so his dominance looks set to continue for another few years yet! He is, as they say, on a roll!

Gemma and I caught up with him backstage before his first night in Birmingham and I was blown away… Despite being a huge star, he was just so normal! He's the kind of guy you could walk past in the street or be standing next to in Starbucks. Bearing in mind he was about an hour away from going on stage on Friday in front of 15,000 fans he was remarkably relaxed. “I don't really get nervous anymore, I did at the start of the tour because it was all new but we're into the run now and I know what I'm doing. I've just got to go out there and play some songs, it's cool!”

I think this might be the secret ingredient in his success. He's so amazingly comfortable in his own skin. No nerves, nothing to prove, no side to him - he's just relaxed, confident and just really, really nice! On the day, he'd just held on to the number one album position beating Steps (who looked like they might steal his crown). He was gutted for them! “I've been number one for a while, I really wanted them to do it cos it would have been great for them, they probably hate me.” On the contrary Lee from Steps told us they want to collaborate with him!

Unlike many music stars who have had all the PR training and give you short, rehearsed, vanilla answers, Ed just chats. And he says exactly what he wants!

It's hard to believe that the normal, humble, fairly quiet guy sitting next to us backstage is the same guy that an hour later was on stage in front of a packed Barclaycard Arena taking people on an emotional journey from tears to euphoria with just his voice, beautiful words and guitar. He really is the most ordinary, extraordinary man!

Hear the new sound to Heart Breakfast with Ed and Gemma, weekdays from 6-10am. Tune in on Heart 100.7, DAB, at heart.co.uk or via Heart mobile app.
