Porsche 718 Boxster wins Best Sports Car

Porsche 718 Boxster wins Best Sports Car at UK Car of the Year Awards 2017

Porsche is proving it is the benchmark sports car manufacturer with the announcement that its 718 Boxster won the Best Sports Car of 2017 at the UK Car of the Year Awards just over a year since it first went on sale.

A compelling combination of a flat configuration ‘box’-er engine and road ‘ster’ styling, the performance and handling of the Boxster has been acclaimed by enthusiasts since first being launched in 1996. Last year, the latest generation of Boxster was unveiled, powered by a newly- developed range of flat four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engines with turbocharging. At the same time, a new designation was introduced; 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S.

These new models continue the tradition of the Porsche 718 mid- engined sports cars that won numerous races in the 1950s and 1960s, powered by four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engines. It also sits neatly beside the established sports car icons with numbered identities – 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman, 911 Carrera, 918 Spyder, 919 Hybrid.

More powerful yet more fuel efficient, the centrepiece of the new model series is the 718 Boxster. Its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine boasts 300 hp, offering the potential for 0-62 mph in 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 174 mph. The considerable power gain of 35 hp compared to the previous Boxster models is matched by the impressive efficiency of the new turbo engines. The new 718 Boxster models have fuel economy improvements of up to 13 per cent.

“Unrivalled driving pleasure – and it is so easy to drive, with perfect weighting of the major controls,” said Paul Hudson, one of the expert judges, while another, Tom Ford, said the 718 Boxster was “…faster, more precise, more efficient, subjectively better all-round. Still the master of its class.”

Launched in 2014, the UK Car of the Year Awards are judged by 27 of Britain’s most-read motoring journalists. Each judge uses their expertise to pick out the top performer in 12 vehicle categories, before deciding the overall winner from their favourites in each class.

The UK Car of the Year Awards (UKCOTY) is a wholly independent set of awards, designed to highlight and advise on the best new cars on the market specifically for British customers.

The Boxster has a recommended retail price starting from £39,878. Further details on the car are available from Porsche Centre Tewkesbury on 01684 214 459 or by visiting www.porschetewkesbury.co.uk
