T

oday we are privileged to have easy access to many effective natural modalities and local resources to treat chronic pain. Alternatives include pulsed electromagnetic fi eld therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care,

massage, yoga, diet education, meditation and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). This month we touch on many of them in Kathleen Barnes’ feature article, “Break Free of Chronic Pain: Natural Ways to Feel Much Better.” A good place to start is by reminding ourselves that we have more power

over our physical and emotional well-being than we think. Here are some of my favorite ways to overcome negative feelings, depleted energy and physical pain. Stretch: Bastyr University, in San Diego, found that a simple stretch can do

wonders for mind and body. Stretching major muscle groups in arms, legs and torso by touching fi ngers to toes, reaching for the sky and arching the back stimulates sensory neurons that signal the brain to release energizing endorphins. Take a Kindness Break: Instead of feeling irate over stalled traffi c or waiting

in line, do something nice for someone. Small compassionate acts, like letting someone go ahead or giving them a compliment or smile releases oxytocin, a soothing hormone. Smile: Try starting the day with a loving thought or memory and smile while

placing your hand on your heart; then carry that feeling of content with you throughout the day. EFT: I tap every day before work, which helps me sail through tasks; if I notice

a spot of low energy, I take a quick tapping break to shift my view of things to a more positive perspective, and bring my energy up. (See sidebar on page 40). One of the greatest gifts I’ve received was to learn how to use EFT to support

my health. I was attending an EFT seminar when they asked if anyone was feeling burnt out. Having just started this magazine, I’d been burning the candle at both ends, so I raised my hand. Next they asked if anyone had physical pain; my shoulder hurt from being jammed up in a recent car accident, so I raised my hand again. I was chosen to work with the instructor and the next day was feel- ing much better and optimistic. After a follow-up session the next day, I returned home feeling recharged and pain-free. I had been praying for a ministry that would be an extension of the maga-

zine’s mission in which I could help people heal their emotions. Feeling inspired, I took EFT classes to become a certifi ed teacher. This practice shows me how to control my emotions, rather than let them control me. Tapping on the root of overreactions, fears and anxieties, I can revisit memories and neutralize the core reason for any discomfort. Over time I’ve been able to break free of nega- tive thoughts produced by old emotional wounds and now live peacefully and happily. I love how we are all on a spiritual journey and life is a progress. The chal-

lenge is to keep learning and exploring gentle methods of spiritual, emotional and physical healing until we fi nd what resonates with and works for us.

Blessings for a gloriously healthy summer, Dee Whitaker, Publisher natural awakenings June 2017 5
