Creating Orchestra and Musical Performance Opportunities for Triangle Area Children by Judy Liu, MPH

Philharmonic Association: “I know that the most joy in my life has come to me from my violin.” –Albert Einstein P

laying musical instruments is associated with various mental, emotional and physical benefits.

Just listening to music has been shown to alleviate pain symptoms and reduce depression. The Philharmonic Association (PA)

is a wonderful not-for-profit organiza- tion in North Carolina. Their mission is to provide opportunities for young musicians to learn, understand, and perform all genres of great classical and jazz music; to provide professional training to promote the students’ par- ticipation in and lifelong understanding and love of great classical and jazz music; and to increase family aware- ness and community interest in order to ensure continuing appreciation of, participation in, and financial support of these musical activities. The Association was formed almost

thirty years ago to provide musically talented students opportunities to practice and perform together in an orchestra setting. Their success con- tinues to attract many local musically talented students to join their organi- zation. PA supports the love of great music in young musicians by providing free or low cost music ensemble training. No qualified musical student is

turned away. Their ensembles include three full symphony orchestras, three string orchestras, four jazz ensembles, and multiple chamber ensembles, in which young people study and perform great classical and jazz music. The different groups seek to provide

opportunities to 4th through 12th grade musicians of various levels of proficiency. The Triangle Youth Phil- harmonic is the most advanced full orchestra; the Triangle Youth Symphony is for moderately advanced musicians; the Triangle Youth Orchestra is for intermediate students with less orchestral experience; the Triangle Youth String Sinfonia and the Triangle Youth String Orchestras, held in two rehearsal locations, are for young string players to develop their ensemble skills. The PA also spon- sors the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensem- ble, Triangle Youth Jazz Orchestra and Triangle

Youth Jazz Band for advanced middle and high school musicians interested in studying and performing the best of the big band jazz literature. Triangle Youth Jazz Lab is a non-auditioned group for those interested in exploring jazz. Many of their students have con-

tinued their musical endeavors and have become prestigious professional musicians and conductors. It is exciting to learn that PA provides such wonderful musical opportunities for students as they continue on their musical journey. Orchestra participants pay a small

annual fee to receive ensemble training to participate in the various orchestra events. These fees cover less than 50% of the organization’s operating costs. The remaining operating costs are covered through donations, corporate contribu- tions and paid event ticket sales. You can support this organization

by purchasing performance tickets and attending their fall and spring concerts held at the Cary Arts Center in Cary, NC and the Meymandi Concert Hall at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, NC. You can also donate to this organization to support music ensemble training. For more information, please visit www.philharmonic-association.org
