PLANNING FOR LATER LIFE 063 At your leisure
Now’s the ideal time to get outside and enjoy your leisure time, plus news on Care Home Open Day 2017
T
he beauty of being retired is, that at last, you have time to yourself to do the things that you like to do. There really is so much to do and discover here on
your doorstep – and because of the many concessions available to the over 60s it needn’t cost you much to enjoy a day out either, and there’s transport help available for the less mobile and those without cars or who don’t drive.
So whether you fancy a visit to a stately home or castle, a trip to the theatre or cinema, going to the gym or on a shopping spree, or indulging in a lingering lunch with
friends, you really are spoilt for choice. Our county boasts many places of historical and cultural interest with plenty more in nearby Surrey, Sussex and London. However, delightful though these places are, mature visitors often struggle with steep hills, narrow stairs and distances between sites and car parks. It’s worth noting that the 11-acre gardens at Walmer Castle are level with wide paths, while Dover Castle’s tunnels and its Great Tower’s ground fl oor are accessible even though the castle is on a hill. Such information is readily available at the click of a mouse on the Silver Travel Advisor website, the award-winning voice
of over 50s and over 60s holidays and travel. Visit
www.silvertraveladvisor.com Both English Heritage and the National
Trust offer age-related concessions. If you are a regular visitor a membership will save you money. For example, senior membership of English Heritage (one adult aged 60 years plus) costs £3.83 a month or £46 for annual membership and entitles you to unlimited entry to more than 400 historic places, a magazine and a handbook plus more. Visit
www.english-heritage.org.uk or call the membership team on 0370 333 1182. For the National Trust, visit www.

Care Home Open Day 2017
Taking place annually for the fi fth time on 16th June, Care Home Open Day’s emphasis is on the importance of connecting with local communities, developing lasting relationships and encouraging intergenerational rapport. This year’s theme will be
“Friendship” and is being celebrated in conjunction with The Big Lunch, part of the Eden Project in Cornwall
and an annual event which aims to get as many people as possible to share lunch together in an act of friendship that will encourage communities to connect. It’s the perfect recipe for having fun with your neighbours, feeding community spirit and helping to build stronger neighbourhood connections – so fi ts in nicely with the Care Home Open Day ethos.
Care Home Open Day is a UK- wide initiative. Thousands of care homes across the UK take part each year, welcoming the public and arranging events and activities that help to create lasting links between care home residents and their local communities. • To fi nd a participating care home near you, visit www.
